Location Glenwood Springs, Colorado is a scenic three-hour drive on I-70 (158 miles) west of Denver off I-70 at exit 116 just west of the majestic Glenwood Canyon. It is a one and one-half-hour drive east of Grand Junction (89 miles). It is centrally located between two of Colorado's premier ski resorts, Aspen (45 miles) and Vail (60 miles).

CLIMATE

At 5,746 feet, Glenwood Springs enjoys an alpine climate with practically no humidity in summer. June, July and August temperatures are in the 70's and 80's. In the fall (September-November) temperatures are in the mid 60's and 70's during the day, with evening temperatures dropping to the 30's and 40's. Winter (December-February) daytime temperatures range in the 30's and 40's, and spring (March-May) temperatures are in the 60's and 70's. The average annual precipitation is 16.5 inches, and the average annual snowfall in town is 67 inches. At higher elevations annual precipitation is 30 to 40 inches. The average growing season is 130 days (May 19-September 26).

By train:
AMTRAK has service in Glenwood Springs to and from Chicago (daily), San Francisco (daily), and Los Angeles (daily).

By air:
Airports in the area served by commercial airlines:

  • Denver (Denver International Airport)
  • Grand Junction (Walker Field)
  • Eagle/Vail (Eagle County Regional Airport) - 25 miles east of Glenwood Springs; commercial flights in winter months only.
  • Aspen (Sardy Field) - 40 miles southeast of Glenwood Springs.

By bus:
  • Greyhound Service is available, west through Grand Junction and east through Denver - five or six schedules daily (changes seasonally). Greyhound also has connecting service to Denver International Airport.
  • Ride Glenwood Springs: Service is available to travel around Glenwood Springs. RFTA provides bus service for the valley, from Aspen to Glenwood Springs, 14 times daily.
  • Sunlight Mountain Resort has a free shuttle service to and from the ski area during ski season.
By Car:
  • Preferred Limousine Provides daily year-round service from Denver through Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction or Aspen.

Government
  • Glenwood Springs is governed by a strong city-manager form of government, with an elected seven-member city council, which appoints a mayor and a city manager. Voting Laws
  • In order to vote in Colorado, a person must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years or older. A person must have registered 25 days prior to any election and meet a 32-day residency requirement. Applications for voter registration can be made at the Garfield County Clerk and Recorder's Office, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or at the Driver's License Office during their normal office hours.
Automobile Licenses
  • Residents of Colorado, and/or companies or corporations doing business in Colorado who own or control the use of a motor vehicle, must title and register in Colorado. Colorado residents must apply for a Colorado title and registration as soon as a vehicle is purchased or when the owner of the vehicle is employed or residency is established. Information is available from the Motor Vehicle Division of the Garfield County Clerk and Recorder's Office in the County Courthouse.
Driver's Licenses
  • Driver's license applications can be obtained Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Driver's License Office in the Glenwood Springs Mall on Hwy. 6 and 24 in West Glenwood Springs. Tests can be taken from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. No appointment is required. New residents to the state have 30 days after establishing residency or employment to obtain a Colorado driver's license. A valid driver's license, birth certificate, passport or other positive identification will be required at the time of application (photocopies of I.D. not accepted).
Marriage Licenses
  • Marriage licenses are issued by the Garfield County Clerk and Recorder's Office in the County Courthouse, or at the Rifle Annex of County Clerks at 902 Taugenbaugh, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A person must be 18 to secure a license without parental consent. The license is good for a period of 30 days. Applicants must present proof of age, such as a driver's license or birth certificate.

Colorado Small Business Development Center
  • The Colorado Small Business Development Center (SBDC) offers counseling and other services to anyone interested in starting a small business, as well as to existing small businesses in need of counsel. Also, in conjunction with Colorado Mountain College, the SBDC offers training via a variety of classes, workshops, seminars and conferences. The Colorado Small Business Development Center is located at the Colorado Mountain College District Office.
