Consumers Energy is a consumer-owned energy solutions and energy services company. Local ownership, local control, not-for-profit operations and cooperation -- Consumers Energy is something special -- a unique way of doing business. Our mission is to be a local provider of safe, reliable and high value energy solutions to our members and customers throughout central Iowa.

Consumers Energy organizes itself into three units: electric distribution, natural gas distribution and energy services. Our headquarters is in Marshalltown, IA, which is a located 60 minutes northeast of Des Moines and has a population of 27,000. We also have a district office in Nevada, IA, which is 10 minutes east of Ames, IA, and has a population of 6,000.

The electric distribution business was formed in 1938 and is operated within an assigned service territory. Its assets includes poles, wires and substations scattered across Tama, Marshall, Jasper, Story and Polk Counties in central Iowa. It has over 4,500 customers and is the primary revenue source for the cooperative. Our electric distribution business enjoys success by having hard working, diligent, responsive and efficient employees. Delivering electrons requires safe work practices and a well designed, constructed and maintained system.

The natural gas distribution business was formed in 2000 with the construction of a 10-mile pipeline from Mingo to the Harvester. Since it is in its infancy, it has less than 50 customers. This business is looking to expand its customer and asset base rapidly both inside and outside the assigned electric territory of Consumers Energy by aggressively seeking out developers and landowners who may be predisposed to having an alternative gas distribution system. We recently obtained a natural gas franchise from the City of Ankeny and have constructed a system on the west and south side of town. Growth areas for this division will be The Harvester sub development and in Ankeny.

The Energy Services business will aggressively market its energy-related products and services in central Iowa. Products and services will include arranging for customer's energy commodity requirements when they have a choice, which may include electricity, natural gas, propane and heating oil, as well as helping customers optimize their energy consumption by developing innovative and customized energy efficiency solutions, and helping them understand their usages better. Continuing to upgrade our knowledge base of alternative fuels, load profiles, energy efficiency concepts and new energy technologies will be the key to the success of the energy services' business initiatives.

Energy Professionals in all three business units will work hard to earn referrals and manage two-way relationships with customers. Employees at all levels of the organization are expected to demonstrate leadership qualities and possess the initiative to learn new skills. Additionally, employees recognize the importance of cooperating with fellow employees and partners to get and keep customers.
