Green Bay Packaging Inc.
Green Bay, Wisconsin
Our History:
In 1933, George Kress had an idea...to manufacture corrugated shipping containers to replace the more expensive, cumbersome wooden boxes used by cheese makers and other businesses at the time. His idea was a success; so successful, in fact, that by 1942 his company, known then as Green Bay Box, began producing folding cartons. By 1948, Green Bay Pulp & Paper Company was formed to produce corrugated medium for use at Green Bay Box.
In 1965, the Arkansas Kraft mill in Morrilton was built to supply the company with kraft linerboard. In 1983 the company began to manufacture white linerboard for containers and displays requiring brighter, color enhanced graphic presentation. In 1991, the Green Bay mill was reconfigured to produce the industry's first high performance linerboard using 100% recycled fiber.
At the time when the mills were experiencing rapid growth, another business group began to emerge. Founded in the early 1960's, Diversified Products (currently known as Coated Products Operations), started by slitting core stocks and applying barrier coatings to linerboard for direct contact packaging. By the early 1970's, this division began to coat and laminate pressure-sensitive label stock. To facilitate the demanding requirements of the diverse roll label market, Coated Products has gone through several expansions.
Growth and expansion are a great indication of a successful company. This is evident in the corrugated business of Green Bay Packaging. In the 1990's, new state-of-the-art facilities were built in Coon Rapids, MN and Kalamazoo, MI. Also, Green Bay Packaging acquired two sheet plants located in Chickasha, OK and Pulaski, TN, and established one in El Paso, TX.
The secret to Kress's success was innovation, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to customer service. Decades later, those same qualities remain the basic fiber of our organization.
