Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) is a 521-bed non-profit, community hospital located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, home to roughly 500,000 people. Established in 1893, LGH is one of the commonwealth's busiest hospitals, treating over 58,000 patients annually and includes a freestanding Women & Babies Hospital, an outpatient Health Campus and several health centers throughout the county.
LGH is the keystone of an integrated healthcare delivery system that includes 40 other healthcare related organizations such as the Visiting Nurses Association, Occupational Medicine, a homecare company and multiple physician practices. The Lancaster General system is the county's largest employer. The mission of Lancaster General is to advance the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities it serves by providing superior healthcare that demonstrates community benefit.
Work continues on a two-year $58 million expansion project that includes construction of a 96,000-square-foot Orthopedic Center and 82,000 square feet in renovations and additions to the existing hospital. The future Lancaster General Orthopedic Center will consist of a new, three-story addition. This addition will be dedicated to the unique and diverse needs of orthopedic patients at virtually every stage of life. The facility will include seven custom designed, state-of-the-art orthopedic surgical suites for inpatient and outpatient surgeries, 42 hospital private patient rooms, advanced physical and occupational therapy, inpatient rehabilitation, and a full complement of other hospital services.
The surgical services to be provided at the Lancaster General Orthopedic Center will include reconstructive surgery, joint care, arthroscopic and microscopic surgery, treatment of back and spinal disorders, sports medicine, traumatic injury care, repairing of complex fractures, and treatment of shoulder, hand and ankle problems.
A $15 million expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department is also slated for completion in December 2003. The project the will meet a projected 37 percent increase in emergency cases over the next five years and accommodate more than 90,000 patient visits a year. Additional expansions include a new and expanded main entrance, complete with a fountain and patient education rooms and a new patient circulation tower which will add four elevators to the center of the hospital. A recent expansion to the hospital's parking garage on Duke and James streets added 200 spaces to the facility.
Lancaster General Hospital has a reputation for excellence and has been recognized with multiple distinctions and awards such as the 100 Top Hospitals Cardiology, Orthopedic & ICU Benchmark for Success Awards, 100 Top Hospitals Award - five consecutive years in a row, VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Effectiveness in 1999 and U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Hospitals in Urology, Hospital & Health Network Magazine's Most Wired Award for the last four consecutive years, and the Best Places to Work in PA Honor in 2002 & 2003.
Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital is a freestanding, family-centered facility that is unlike any hospital in the region. It is located about three miles from Lancaster General Hospital and focuses completely on the healthcare needs of women. In addition to delivering over 85% of the babies in the county, LGH's Women & Babies Hospital provides comprehensive women's health services including diagnostic testing, breast care, osteoporosis diagnosis and prevention, menopause education and counseling, fitness and wellness programs, as well as inpatient and outpatient surgery.
