Company History
CONMED Linvatec, originally called Concept Inc. and most recently known simply as Linvatec, was incorporated in Pinellas County, FL in October 1963 by Terry F. Tanner, M.D., the medical director for Honeywell. Today, some 40 years later, CONMED Linvatec has become a significant member of the CONMED Corporation family of companies and consists of multiple manufacturing facilities, numerous product lines and a large U.S. distributor based sales force. CONMED Linvatec also employs an international staff of more than 50 who handle the sales and distribution of its products worldwide.
During the early 1980s, Concept began to focus on the orthopaedic and microsurgery markets. In 1983, a new product line - Electrosurgical Arthroscopy - was introduced for the examination and repair of joint structures.
Shutt Medical Technologies, originally located in San Dimas, California, was acquired by Concept in 1983. This division manufactures premier hand-held surgical instruments and, in July, the facility was closed in California and transferred to Largo, Florida.
In 1988 Concept moved to its present 200,000-square-foot site in Largo at the corner of Starkey and Bryan Dairy Roads. New York-based Bristol-Myers Squibb Company bought Concept in 1990, and the company name was changed to Linvatec Corporation in 1991. Linvatec, an acronym for Least Invasive Technologies, was chosen because it more accurately portrayed the broad range of least-invasive surgical products and services offered.
In late 1994, Bristol-Myers Squibb began the relocation of its Hall Surgical division from Carpenteria, California, to Largo, Florida. Hall was started in 1959 by Pittsburgh oral surgeon Dr. Robert Hall. Dr. Hall adapted air-powered tools for oral surgery and his first product, the Surgairtome Powered Surgical Instrument, was introduced to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1963. Today, Hall Surgical product lines include pneumatic, electric and battery powered surgical instruments used in open orthopaedic surgery and other surgical applications, such as oral/maxillofacial, otolaryngology, thoracic surgery, podiatry, hand surgery and neurosurgery.
On December 31, 1997, CONMED Corporation, based in Utica, New York, purchased Linvatec. CONMED is a medical technology company that is a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of RF electrosurgical systems used routinely to cut and cauterize tissue in nearly all types of surgical procedures worldwide, endoscopy products such as trocars, clip appliers, scissors, and surgical staplers. CONMED Corporation further offers state of the art, turn-key solutions for hospitals and surgery centers for the custom design and installation of integrated ceiling pendant supports and surgical lights for operating rooms and intensive care units. The company also manufactures and sells a full line of Patient Care products such as ECG electrodes and defibrillation/pacing pads for heart monitoring as well as suction instruments and tubing and IV and Wound Care products.
Since acquiring Linvatec, CONMED Corporation has added strategic complementary businesses to the Linvatec product portfolio. In 1998, it acquired the arthroscopy fluid management business from 3M and followed in 1999 with the powered surgical instrument product line from 3M.
In March, 2003 CONMED Corporation acquired Bionx Implants, Inc. Based in Blue Bell, PA, Bionx developed and manufactured self-reinforced, resorbable polymer implants including screws, pins and meniscal implants for use in a variety of orthopedic applications including sports medicine and fracture fixation. It is best known for its Meniscus Arrow TM bioabsorbable implant for repair of tears of the meniscus in the knee. These products added significant depth to CONMED's own arthroscopy sports medicine product offering which its Linvatec division handles. In addition, the acquisition brought important research and development capabilities in self-reinforced polymers.
In February 2005 the company formally took on the CONMED logo and began marketing itself under the name CONMED Linvatec. This change further enhanced the companys overall ability to more effectively communicate the breadth of our value proposition to our customers while still retaining the connection to the reputation that accompanies the Linvatec name.
Today CONMED Linvatec is a leading manufacturer of orthopaedic arthroscopy and power surgical products. It also manufactures products that serve the sports medicine, hand, podiatry and otolaryngology markets, and other surgery specialties. The CONMED Linvatec business unit employs over 900 people in Largo and approximately 50 people at its California sites.
