Springdale, the state's fourth-largest city at more than 70,000, sits in the geographic center of what we call Northwest Arkansas, a region of more than 460,000. Tyson Foods, the world's largest producer of protein, has its headquarters here with the corporate homes of Walmart and JB Hunt Transport just up the road.
Here, new jobs are increasing, consumer confidence is growing, the brightest young minds are being challenged and it's all in a place that has a Cost of Living Index that's the 10th lowest in the United States. Soon, our region's-best hospital will spend $11 million on an expansion that will elevate its emergency room operations to top-shelf status. Soon, construction will begin on a new interstate interchange that will improve visitors' access from I-540 to our award-winning Arvest Ballpark - home to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals...the Double A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Here, students in the Gifted and Talented Program of the Springdale School District enjoy knowing their program has been rated the best in the state of Arkansas. Here, our dynamic manufacturing community predicts as many as 450 new jobs will be added in 2012. And here, thousands from around the world are traveling to see the spectacular new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art that is re-defining how Americans can access some of the world's great artwork.
Everything is big in Springdale. Here, even nano is huge as the Springdale Technology Park is home to one of the world's leading R&D firms focused on nanotechnology - NanoMech. The company is challenging how the world is utilizing this technology to advance innovations in machining and manufacturing, lubrication and energy, packaging for fresh produce supply chain, biomedical implant coatings and strategic military applications.
