Y-12 Federal Credit Union
Company Profile:
The Y-12 National Security Complex plays an important role in U.S. national security and is a one-of-a-kind facility in the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Nuclear Weapons Complex. Constructed as part of the World War II Manhattan Project, Y-12 was responsible for separating uranium-235 from natural uranium by the electromagnetic process. Today, the site maintains a uranium and lithium technology base for the United States and focuses on defense-related R&D and nuclear nonproliferation.
MISSIONS
Providing critical elements of NNSA’s missions that ensure the safety, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons deterrent;
Supplying special nuclear material for use in naval reactors;
Promoting international nuclear safety and nonproliferation;
Reducing global dangers from weapons of mass destruction; and
Supporting U.S. leadership in science and technology.
Another long-standing mission is the support of other federal agencies through its Work for Others program. Y-12 applies its expertise to solving a wide range of problems for U.S. industry through partnering and technology transfer.
CAPABILITIES:
Y-12 has developed state-of-the-art capabilities in manufacturing technologies, prototyping, technical computing, nuclear nonproliferation and safeguards and security.
FACILITY SIZE:
811 acres, spanning 2.5 miles, with approximately 500 buildings housing about 7 million square feet of laboratory, dismantlement and R&D areas
PERSONNEL ON-SITE:
B&W Y-12, 4500; NNSA, 85; total personnel on-site, 6000, including employees of UT-Battelle, Science Applications International Corporation, Bechtel Jacobs Company and Wackenhut Services, Inc.
LOCATION:
Y-12 is located in the Bear Creek Valley of East Tennessee, adjacent to the city of Oak Ridge (pop. 28,000) and about 15 miles from Knoxville.
