Quality Department Manager

Summary:
Plans, coordinates, and directs facility-level quality assurance program, designed to ensure quality production of products consistent with established standards by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Formulates and maintains quality assurance objectives complementary to company policies and goals.
Reviews processing schedule and quality requirements to determine staffing requirements, work procedures, and duty assignments.
Reviews strategies and confers with corporate quality and production staff to develop, continually improve, and maintain quality of existing product.
Reviews all data obtained during all quality assurance activities, including production, quality, maintenance, and operations reports, to ensure consistency with company policies and procedures and to detect production problems.
Develops new approaches to solve problems identified during quality assurance activities.
Keeps management team informed of significant issues and actions being taken to improve the situation.
Directs and coordinates activities of employees engaged in supervision, control, and production of canned food products.
Maintains a working knowledge of government and industry quality assurance codes and standards.
Plays an active role on quality management teams within the organization, including food safety committee.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises 5 to 10 employees in the Quality Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelors degree in Food Safety or Biological Science preferred; five years experience in the manufacture of canned vegetable products; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of inputs, outputs, raw material, waste, quality control, costs and techniques for maximizing production and distribution of canned foods.
Product grading and inspection skills for all products canned at facility.
Knowledge of policies and procedures involved in human resources functions.
Knowledge of agricultural operations and techniques for growing and harvesting foods.
The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
