Job Description:
Serves as steward of the resources (human, financial and otherwise) provided by Heartland Foundation. As a servant leader, the person in this position serves others while staying focused on achieving results in line with the organization's values and integrity. The Grant Writer/Communications Specialist works under the supervision of the Senior Director of Development in a collaborative environment to shape and steward the Foundation's vision and mission: Serves as a key member of the Foundation operations team-shaping and stewarding Heartland Foundation's vision and mission: to build healthier, more livable communities and to empower children and adults to improve their health and quality. This person is responsible for planning and managing all aspects of grants development in producing strong and continuing philanthropic returns to the organization, and serves as a key member of the Foundation Servant Leadership Team.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Works with the Foundation's Operations Leadership Team (OLT) to brainstorm marketing and communications strategies to carry out region-wide strategies that promote the overall work of the Foundation:
Completes detailed Planning, Deployment, and Results process to forecast and activate tactics to leverage high impact philanthropy outcomes. Analyzes results quarterly, reports outcomes in Balanced Scorecard, and determines actions for next quarter.
Conducts research using the Internet, journals, and other sources to determine grant sources and governmental funds. Utilizes database tools to capture prospective funder profiles, arrange contacts, etc. Assure database is set up and maintained.
Synthesizes and communicates complex information into clear and concise grant proposals that meet the requirements of funders. Circulates drafts for feedback to assure grant proposal content reflects program scope and financial resource needs. Revises and completes final proposal and support documentation, assuring timely submissions and appropriate follow-up. Develops associated relationships with prospective grantors.
Assists with the creation of grant budgets and budget reports.
Determines grant administration requirements upon successful grant award. Work with internal program and accounting staff to assure monitoring is established and carried out according to requirements.
Supports other development efforts of the organization as requested.
Participate in organizational events and activities so as to understand strategies and goals of the organization and facilitate relevant relationships with outside parties.
Works with the Senior Director of Development to secure grants and gifts for an endowment building campaign to raise a minimum of $5.0 million to meet Heartland Health's pledge of $2.5 million in new operating endowed funds by the year 2015.
Builds protocols for a comprehensive regional database in gathering investor profiles. Works with Senior Director of Development to:
Update and examine investor profiles concerning organizational data, program interests,
Customize plans to build and sustain relations with grantors.
Evaluate impact of those relationships in promoting Foundation's mission and reaching desired outcomes.
Records key information about grantors using comprehensive database to:
Update and examine profiles concerning personal interests and aspirations, connections, investor history, and level of gift support.
Customize plans for transformational giving that will experientially build and sustain healthy and productive bonds with grantors, gift investors, and partners.
Evaluate impact of those relationships in promoting Foundation's vision and mission to reach desired outcomes.
Prepares and files compliance/progress reports and assures information is accurate and timely for special audits required by appropriate agencies, investors, and grantors.
Works with Chief Operating Officer and the Leadership Operations Team in developing a communications platform for Heartland Foundation. Collaborates with Operations Leadership Team to develop protocols and co-delivers marketing and communications activities to disseminate results to key stakeholders. Facilitates a variety of communication venues including:
Annual Snapshot of Your Investment
Direct mail communications and campaigns
Website development
Community events and trade shows
Receptions and events planning
Investor briefings
Writes/edits press releases, awards applications, and news articles and outsources graphic design elements for external communications, which may include: brochures, ads, newsletters, and other communications pieces.
Reviews and approves external communications, according to organizational standards and branding guidelines, to ensure consistency in communication.
Assists in public relations and media relations as needed.
Develops and manages relationships with outsource vendors and makes decisions regarding the most cost-effective placement of work.
Serves as the Foundation's liaison for all website updates to maintain a dynamic Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 presence.
Undertakes miscellaneous assignments at discretion of Senior Director of Development.
Job Qualifications: EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication, or other related field. A successful track record of translating program opportunities into successful grant proposals that gains the attention of prospective grant funders.
LICENSURE: Valid driver's license.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of four years experience in grants management and/or communications environment, including project management, writing, copy editing, proofreading. Graphic design skills a plus.
