Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Location: Laurel, Maryland

Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer.

Responsibilities

To provide professional-level skills for the design, estimation, and documentation of mechanical engineered systems for construction and renovation projects. Generate designs, perform engineering calculations, and create documentation for heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), fire suppression, and plumbing systems. Develop HVAC, plumbing, and sprinkler labor and material cost estimates for resources to accomplish construction and renovation projects using standards-based reference guides. Apply technical expertise in problem solving for mechanical construction and renovation projects. Review drawings prepared by consultants. Consult with customers in problem identification/problem solving for mechanical issues. Review mechanical designs prepared by consultants for renovation and new construction projects.

Qualifications
Required:

B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. Experience gained through a minimum of 5 years of mechanical design including background in HVAC, plumbing, and sprinkler systems. CAD knowledge gained through a minimum of 2 years experience or a combination of classroom instruction and experience. Computer literacy in PC-based applications including Windows, spreadsheets, and word processing. Ability to work in a team environment. Effective interpersonal skills. Must possess a current state-of-residence driver¿s license. Applicants will be subject to a background investigation and evaluation.

Desired:
Experience gained through a minimum of 2 years of mechanical construction field experience. Knowledge/experience with computer-based estimating systems. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

Special Work Conditions
Usual working hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Requires the operation of APL vehicles. Occasional travel and overtime may be required. Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, roofs, etc.; inspect below desks, ductwork, pipes, etc.; and lift 50 lbs.

Security
