Communications Countermeasures Engineer / Associate Professional Staff I / II

Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Communications Countermeasures Engineer.

Responsibilities
Participate in development of new communications jamming systems and jamming waveform optimization of deployed countermeasures systems. Test and evaluate digital communications systems in an electronic countermeasures environment. Analyze wireless communications and networking standards and protocols and their implementation. Assess and test communications systems interactions with and vulnerabilities to countermeasures waveforms.

Duties Include:
1. Perform systems analysis and systems engineering related to the development of new communication jamming systems. Perform test and evaluation of communications systems and countermeasures in laboratory and field environments. Participate in testing and analyze test results.
2. Analyze and maintain cognizance of communications and networking standards and protocols and their implementation in fielded communications systems. Assess potential system and network vulnerabilities to countermeasures based on these protocols and standards. Identify potential jamming waveforms that can exploit vulnerabilities.
3. Perform modeling, simulation, and analysis of communications systems and countermeasures, including consideration of the RF propagation environment.
4. Document and present analyses and testing to peers and sponsors.

Qualifications
Required:

BS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics.
Zero to ten years experience with modern digital communications systems or an equivalent technology.
Ability to understand basic wireless communications systems components and operation.
Ability to understand link budgets.
Ability to understand basic electronics laboratory equipment and procedures.
Ability to work as a member of a team and communicate technical results in written and oral formats.

Desired:

MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics, with experience in digital RF communications systems networking protocols and standards.
Basic understanding of signal processing and signal waveforms.
Basic understanding of communication systems standards and protocols.
Understanding of RF propagation, communications receivers and system architectures, modulation and demodulation processes, and detection of signals in interference.
Experience developing mathematical/analytical models and analysis tools using MATLAB and Labview.

Special Work Conditions
Laboratory and field testing of RF systems. Some travel required to support field testing. Future needs may require the ability to be eligible for DOD Top Secret clearnace requiring background investigation and/or polygraph examination. Preference would be for current SSBI.

Security

Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
