Research Prototype Software Engineer

Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Research Prototype Software Engineer.
Responsibilities
Implement software systems to support research and demonstrate novel concepts. Assist in the transition of research through the development of software systems that apply research concepts to various APL sponsor domains. Working with a technical lead or principal investigator, design, develop, and test prototype software systems as a member of a small development team. Demonstrate solid software engineering skills in all areas of application development (object oriented design, multi-threading, database connectivity, user interface development, etc.) Possess the flexibility, initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm to develop systems with limited specification, as well as to actively contribute ideas as part of a research team.
Qualifications
Required:
B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent. 3-5 years professional experience. Knowledge of Java SE, Swing, database technologies (SQL, MySQL, H2, JDBC, etc.), configuration management (CVS or Subversion), Ant, GForge. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired:
M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent. Experience with Web technologies (Web Services, HTML, XML/XSLT/XSD, JAXB, Java EE, etc.), information retrieval technologies (Lucene, Nutch, entity extractors, etc.), ontology technologies (Pellet, Jena, OWL, etc.), visualization toolkits (prefuse, JUNG, Piccolo, etc.), GIS experience (ESRI ArcGIS, FalconView, NASA WorldWind, etc.), JavaCC, Hibernate, Python, JUnit.
Security
