Position Overview:
The major goal of the radiology nurse is to provide quality-nursing care to both in and out patients in the Diagnostic Imaging Department. The radiology nurse cares for the pediatric adult elderly acutely ill or chronically ill patients. The radiology nurse must be familiar with the patient's bill of rights and seek assistance from other resources when needed to ensure individualized care. Skills utilized in the job performance include assessment communication teaching leadership and management. The nurse ensures patient privacy dignity and safety. Areas where the nurse may function are: general diagnostic special procedures radiotherapy nuclear medicine ultrasound computerized tomography magnetic resonance imaging and mammography.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES JOB DUTIES AND PROJECTS:
1. Prioritize patients needs and function as patient advocate.
2. Assesses the biological psychological sociological and cultural needs of the patient and family.
3. Assess and monitor patient condition including vs. monitoring and recognition of EKG changes and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
4. Administer contrast material appropriately and in a safe manner.
5. Recognize document and assist in the treatment of contrast reactions.
6. Intervene appropriately and efficiently in an emergency situation.
7. Assist radiologists with special procedures and treatments that require professional nursing skills.
8. Administer conscious sedation and monitors patients per hospital policy and procedure.
9. Provide continuity of care for the critically ill patients from ER & ICU.
10. Demonstrate skill in using special equipment such as monitors infusion pumps O2 equipment ventilators etc.
11. Document appropriately patient status and nursing interventions.
12. Demonstrate ability to prioritize nursing responsibilities within the department.
EDUCATION
13. Provide health teaching and procedural information to patients and families.
14. Provide staff education on CPR patient care safety infection control.
15. Assist with the orientation of student nurses techs.
16. Evaluate prepare and distribute written patient education material. MANAGEMENT
17. Act as a resource person for ancillary services and radiology staff.
18. Assist with CQI and risk management programs.
19. Participate in the development and evaluation of policies and procedures in radiology.
20. Maintain emergency equipment monitor medication including narcotics and drug boxes located in department.
21. Participate in hospital nursing and radiology committees.
COLLABORATION
22. Act as liaison between radiology and nursing units.
23. Interact with other health care professionals to maintain continuity of quality patient care.
OTHER
24. Complete a yearly performance appraisal before the anniversary date including establishment of goals based on needs identified.
25. Practice effective communication as evidenced by clear and concise transfer of information either verbal or written.
26. Prioritize patient care needs and performs delegates and directs the care as needed.
27. Adapt to change in a positive professional manner.
Education Requirements:
Graduate of a school of nursing.
Experience Requirements:
Has several years of experience (Critical Care exp. is helpful but not mandatory). Works effectively with a variety of professional and ancillary personnel. Has a general knowledge of all areas of nursing practice. Is knowledgeable and proficient in physical assessment aseptic technique IV skills and universal precautions.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/ REGISTRATION: Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas. Certified in Basic Life Support. Advanced Cardiac Life Support preferred.
