Responsibilities:

Imagine yourself working with this team At Aurora Health Care our Genetic Counselors provide genetic counseling as a practitioner in cooperation with a member of the medical staff. They work directly with the patient to provide assessment, counseling, follow-up, and referral to community resources if necessary. They provide needed documentation for patient and physicians. They provide educational information/ experiences for students and health care professionals. They work in collaboration with laboratory services to coordinate necessary services. Imagine yourself
  • Interviewing patients to obtain complete family, pregnancy, and developmental histories, and assessing need for medical records. Researching information regarding a particular disorder and relaying clinical/genetic information in a meaningful way. Interpreting clinical/laboratory finding and conveying them to patients and care providers.
  • Assessing psychosocial situations and offering support. Educating patients regarding the risks and benefits of medical procedures (i.e., Chorionic Villus Sampling, Amniocentesis) so that they can provide informed consent. Referring families to other resources in the community, state or country when necessary and maintaining client contact for follow-up.
  • Providing a written summary of counseling session to the patient and/or their physician.
  • Working directly with ACL or other laboratory providers in ordering necessary blood work and other tests, and evaluating the test results once received. Negotiating with non-ACL labs to arrange for reference testing and other services not provided by ACL.
  • Identifying opportunities to work with new and expanding local and regional genetics programs.
  • Assessing the need for education in the community, then organizing and providing genetic counseling information and education programs for students, health care professionals, and the general public including parents, educators, state agencies and other health care professionals.

Qualifications:
  • Master`s degree in Genetic Counseling.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and municipal laws, regulation and standards that may impact the delivery of services for genetics.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people under stressful circumstances with diplomacy and tact.
  • Excellent organizational and presentation.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Basic computer skills including the use of computer applications.
