Agriculture Advisor

Job Location: Southeast United States

Department: Raw Products/Production

Reports To:
Executive VP, Operations/Raw Products

Summary:
Directs company's Integrated Pest Management and Sustainable Agriculture (IPM/SA) Program. Directs and assists growers and company fieldmen regarding crop production issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Contacts growers to negotiate contracts and to explain terms and conditions of contract and responsibilities.

Determines production possibilities of land by studying data such as history of crop rotation, type and fertility of soil, location, and irrigation.

Advises growers in land selection, preparation, varietal selection, fertility management and timing, and soil and plant testing.

Inspects growing crops for proper growth and maturity and for evidence of disease, weeds, and insect damage, and recommends corrective measures when necessary.

Coordinates insecticide, fungicide, and herbicide usage, and manages irrigation and chemigation.

Maps production fields and ecologically sensitive areas near production fields for IPM/SA program.

Works with regional crop consultants on crop issues.

Continues to develop and implement company IPM/SA program, and directs company fieldmen and outside raw product source groups on program.

Schedules and conducts third-party audits for growers and processing plants for company IPM/SA program with AIB labs.

Completes annual Sysco Sustainable IPM/SA Stewardship Indicator reports.

Directs various Research & Development projects with universities and chemical industry personnel in each state or region, and allocates funding.

Works with EPA and state departments of agriculture to solve regulatory issues.

Other duties as assigned.

Primary Territories:
Southeast United States.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of planting, cultivation, farming machinery and harvesting methods.

Knowledge of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides).

Knowledge of crop diseases, insect pests, and entomology.

Familiarity with IPM/SA programs and resources.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Outlook systems; Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word Processing software.
