The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of diversified heavy, earthmoving, construction equipment, automotive trucks and automated side loaders, front loaders, roll offs, and rear loader trucks.
Work involves the performance of highly skilled tasks in mechanical maintenance, repair and servicing of a wide variety of conventional and specialized equipment, motorized machinery, and the major repair of both gasoline and diesel powered combustion engines. Work assignments are received from a supervisor either verbally or in writing and may include assisting in the diagnosis of the type and extent of work to be done. An employee in this class must be able to repair and maintain over the road and heavy equipment.
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining specialized and moderately complex heavy-duty motorized equipment and large heavy construction type equipment and vehicles safely having complex operating requirements within the operation of a Landfill.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Diagnoses, inspects and performs servicing to a wide variety of light, medium and heavy equipment such as automobiles, trucks, backhoes, loaders, waste handlers, crawler dozer, crawler loaders, articulated dump trucks, 4 wheel drive loaders, skid steers, motor graders, submersible pumps, leachate pumps, sump drainers, front-end loaders, mechanical sweepers, flushers, pump-oriented water tanks, vehicles that haul heavy loads and or tow equipment with or without a trailer; compactors, scraper pans, tractor-type construction equipment, aerial truck hydraulic systems, and other types of heavy earth moving equipment. Makes tests to locate defects in operation; checks on completed repairs before returning equipment back into service.
2. Performs major repairs and maintenance to specialize equipment like hydraulic pumps, steering mechanisms, all types of brakes, electrical wiring, drive shafts, standard and automatic transmissions, differentials, and performs complete overhauls of both gasoline and diesel combustion engines.
3. Overhauls, fabricates, welds, and performs other maintenance services to assemblies and accessories such as single and two-speed rear axles, vacuums, compressed air and hydraulic systems, electronic controls, and components on various equipment and machinery.
4. Performs and operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices, boring bars, valve re-facing and reseating equipment micrometers, dial gauges, clutch over assembly devices, power saws, heavy grinders and drill presses.
5. Operates miscellaneous machinist and welding equipment as required.
6. Regular attendance is required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by Automotive Mechanic course work. A Minimum of five years experience as a certified Heavy Equipment Mechanic, technical or trade school training or degree is preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Three to four years experience as a skilled heavy equipment Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty and construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have experience with different equipment required to include: Caterpillar, Champion, Komatsu, John Deere, Scarab, Volvo, Erin, Mack, Chevrolet, Ford, etc…
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 1. Construction, design, assembly and maintenance of a wide variety of special purpose heavy equipment
2. Tools and equipment needed to overhaul, repair, and maintain heavy duty equipment.
3. Shop arithmetic, schematics, both electrical and hydraulics and drawing related equipment.
4. Occupational hazards and safety precautions
5. Inventory of tools and other equipment used in the shop are kept under the control of the Senior Mechanic II
6. Must have the ability to operate Laptop computers for the diagnostics and calibration of computerized equipment.
7. Work from schematics and drawings related to equipment
8. Exercise adequate safety and precautions against hazards
9. Prepare and keep records of repairs, time and parts used for the servicing of heavy special purpose automotive equipment and make related reports.
10. Regular attendance is required.
