GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This is the highest level of Patrol Officer, and expectations include the regular duties of PO II, along with the displayed expertise, professionalism and motivation to exercise leadership, good judgment and critical decision making skills. The PO III position is remarkable from other Patrol positions in the expectation that a PO III will perform the duties of a Sergeant should a Sergeant not be available. A PO III shall have the support of the Administration in situations where supervisory direction or decisions are delegated to the PO III.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Duties are a mirror of PO II and PO I with the additional expectations of supervisory capability in situations of need. PO III's are expected to have a higher awareness of the legalities and liabilities encountered in critical decisions, and consider those factors into their decisions, advice or direction.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Five years experience as a sworn full-time Police Officer, a minimum of three years with the Glenwood Springs Police Department, a minimum of two years in the position of PO II. Additionally, candidates must have completed at minimum 100 hours of training as a sworn Officer, with at least 50 of those hours in topics accepted by the Chief of Police as Advanced Level Training. Candidates shall have training that lends to the acceptance of the candidate as an Instructor or at minimum much greater expertise in a specialized area of the profession. Education in areas that greatly benefit the candidate's ability to perform the duties of a Police Officer, such as advanced foreign language skills or considerable advancement toward a Criminal Justice degree or other applicable major. In addition, the candidate shall have completed a Supervisory Training program approved by the Chief of Police. When recommended by a Sergeant, the recommendation shall include not only the accomplishment of these standards, but examples of the candidates use of the acquired skills and training, the benefits to the Patrol function and Department as a result of accomplishing these standards, and an assertion of this candidate's leadership within their peer group. Such examples may include the successful performance of complex Special Assignments, such as Task Force assignments, assignments to Investigations, K-9 Officer assignment or Acting Sergeant assignments.
