Deputy Sheriff (Patrol) / Full Time

Job Location: Spotsylvania, VA

Shift: Regular Full-Time (Non-Exempt)

Salary:
$38,039.00 - $42,793.00

Description:
Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work in order to preserve public peace and order; to protect lives, property and rights of the public, and to enforce the laws of the United States of America, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the County of Spotsylvania. Assures appropriate custody and control of prisoners; protects and assists the courts and serves civil process. Work involves patrolling County streets and neighborhoods to deter crime or apprehend and/or arrest violators or suspects; responds to calls for law enforcement assistance and gathers information for criminal investigations. A Deputy may be assigned to any division of the Sheriff's Office as needed. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Reports to a Sergeant and or a First Sergeant.
This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general county offices are closed.

Special Duties & Responsibilities:
Examples Of Essential Job Functions:
* The essential job functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. * Reduces the commission of crimes and maintains law enforcement by patrolling throughout the County. Patrols County streets and neighborhood. Inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments.
* Monitors radio calls; communicates with radio dispatcher and responds to complaints, reports of criminal events, requests for law enforcement, and domestic or public disputes. Apprehends and or arrests persons who violate federal, State or County codes and laws
* Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects; performs searches of people, vehicles and buildings; prepares investigative reports of findings, facts and related information; makes arrests and processes arrested suspects. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis for probable cause for criminal acts; and testifies in court.
* Enforces traffic laws and regulations. Detects traffic violators; performs traffic accident investigations and makes reports. Facilitates the movement of traffic and pedestrians around accidents, disabled traffic control devices or heavily congested areas. Assists disabled motorists. Directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.
* Serves civil and criminal documents. Serves as court Bailiff as requested and ensures security and orderly behavior in courts.
* Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergency scenes and disaster areas.
* Assists persons who are in physical or mental danger.
* Reads, comprehends, and interprets legal and non-legal documents.
* Completes and/or reviews paperwork documenting shift activities, offenses and incidents, victim and suspect statements and other related information.
* Assists other law enforcement personnel and agencies.
* Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the Sheriff's Office and to build cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community.

Additional Job Functions:
* Responds to questions from the public with regard to all issues concerning public safety and correct procedures and processes.
* Maintains assigned vehicle and issued equipment including firearms.
* Transports prisoners and mental patients.
* May participate in special public information programs.
* Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training & Experience:
Requires graduation from high school, or equivalent, and additional law enforcement academy completion. Requires 0 - 6 months of law enforcement work and training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Special Requirements:
Must pass the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Basic Law Enforcement Certification test as administered through an accredited police academy. Must be certified in Firearms usage. Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license.

Additional Requirements:
* Be a United States Citizen
* Be at least 21 years of age
* Have a valid Virginia Driver's License with no more than -6 active points
* Not have any convictions for DUI or DUI related offense within the past 5 years
* Be drug-free and not have any illegal use of any scheduled I, II, or III drugs
* Not have any felony convictions
* Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime or domestic violence
* Not have a history of criminal activity of a serious nature or that reflects moral turpitude, or indicates a tendency to violate the law
* Not have been dishonorably discharged from the military
* Not have indications of continual or unexplained poor financial responsibilities
* Successfully pass each stage of the hiring process
