Brief Description of the Job
Supervises cleaning crew in sweeping/cleaning the central business district streets/sidewalks and garages. Assists in daily clean up as well as following special events. Maintains the cleanliness and safety of downtown areas by coordinating the daily work schedules and assigning work tasks. Oversees the sweeping and cleaning of all major roadways throughout the city. Inspects all city owned property on a continuous basis to create daily tasks. Attends safety training meetings and relays information to staff. Approves employee timesheets, checks work orders, manages special projects and completes performance evaluations as necessary. Receives input from downtown merchants and residents regarding scheduling, complaints, etc.
- Job Duties
Supervise Staff (35%): Supervise the cleaning crew in sweeping/cleaning City streets, sidewalks and garages. Set performance expectations and standards; prioritize and assign work; write and conduct performance evaluations; train, coach, mentor, and counsel employees; ensure staff compliance with departmental and City policies and procedures; and maintain safe work environment. Participate in the hiring and selection of staff for open positions; and ensure the timely documentation and disciplining of employees consistent with Human Resources policies. Attend department/division meetings and relay information to staff.
Coordinate Special Event Clean-Up (35%): Plan, organize, and assist with clean-up following special events. Assist in route coordination and schedules to ensure adequate resources and efficiency.
Performs Administrative Duties (15%): Utilize internal system to create, complete, and close out work orders. Track and record daily work activities. Maintain Network Fleet software and generate reports. Coordinate with Fleet services to ensure vehicles are maintained and operational. Receive input from downtown merchants and residents regarding scheduling, complaints, etc. and respond/refer accordingly.
Oversee & Assist in Street Cleaning/Sweeping (10%): Assist in the daily sweeping and cleaning of all City streets, sidewalks, and garages to include clearing medians of all debris and weeds. Operate sweeper truck, water truck, and mobile pressure washing vehicle to clean streets and remove debris. Use pick sticks and bags to remove trash or unwanted items.
Inclement Weather Operations (5%): Take a lead role in the City`s operations during inclement weather. May be responsible for providing supervision and direction to other departmental personnel. Operate spreaders, snow plows, and brine units. Clean up sidewalks.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: Over two years of experience in Public Works or related field. Experience operating a Street Sweeper Truck is required.
Driver`s License Required: Must have or obtain a Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a Class B South Carolina CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 3 months of hire.
Overall Strength Demands: Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, walking, and carrying. Frequently requires lifting, climbing, vision, foot controls, and talking. Occasionally requires sitting, handling, pushing/pulling, balancing, bending, crouching, and hearing. Rarely requires fine dexterity, reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Assorted hand tools, back pack blowers, brooms, dust pans, pickup truck, yard sweepers, and street flushing water truck.
Computer Equipment and Software: Laptop computer.
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature and wetness and/or humidity. Weekly exposure to respiratory hazards and noise and vibration.
Health and Safety: Rare exposure to chemical hazards, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (City Limits).
Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, rubber boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, dust mask, gloves, and safety boots.
Frequently requires working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires time pressures and frequent change of tasks. Rarely requires emergency situations, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
