Brief Description of the Job
Assists in performing tree services operations such as stump removal, tree removal, tree pruning and trimming. Assists with removal of trees on City property and the disposal of all debris. Responsible for the installation of the Citys holiday light displays. Installs and removes City street pole banners. Cleans up tree debris and removes trees that have fallen on roads and/or private property. Supports special events and other specialized activities. On call for tree emergencies and weather related events.
- Job Duties
Remove and Prune Trees (70%): Assist Senior Tree Tech with the set up and cleanup of each job site. Assist with rigging of tree parts and safety and security of jobsite. Assist with the removal of trees on City property and the disposal of all debris. Assist in performing stump removal, tree pruning and trimming. Operate chain saws, etc., to service trees including remove branches. Chip branches or load into dump truck after removing from tree. Perform all tree care operations following ANSI Z133. Clean-up work area. Maintain equipment when needed. Perform preventative maintenance on tree servicing equipment.
Provide Storm Related Clean-up (15%): Clean up tree debris caused by storm related events to include removing trees that have fallen from City property on to roads and/or private property.
Special Projects (15%): Install and remove street pole banners within the central business district in accordance with the Citys special event schedule. Assist with the set-up and clean-up of special events and assist with various City related projects. Provide ongoing maintenance and replacement of lights within the trees along Main Street.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Over two years of experience in operating heavy equipment, tree care operations, or horticulture.
Drivers License Required: Must have or obtain a valid South Carolina Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a valid Class B South Carolina Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake provisions within 3 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Rigging practices with rope, blocks, cranes and lowering devices.
- ANSI Z133 Safety Requirements for Arboriculture Operations.
- ANSI 300a Standards for proper tree care.
- Read basic communication using common two or three syllable words.
- Perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
- Take direction from Sr. Tree Tech to rig tree parts safely to ground.
- Properly prune young trees from the ground.
- Assist in small pruning jobs by running bucket truck and making proper cuts.
- Operating the tools and equipment listed below.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Bucket trucks (CDL and non-CDL), chain saws, hand saws, front end loaders, backhoes, chains, hand tools, pole saws, ropes, and lowering devices. Dump truck (CDL), skid steer, ditch witch, stump grinder, chipper, large sprayer, spider lift, and excavator.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, explosives, and physical danger or abuse. Rare exposure to communicable diseases.
Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, safety vest, ear plugs or ear muffs, steel-toed boots, chainsaw chaps, gloves, seat belts, safety belts (harness), and hard hat.
Continuously requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking. Very heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.
Frequently requires time pressures, irregular schedule/overtime, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations, frequent change of tasks, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
