MAJOR DUTIES:
Incumbent is a member of a multi-disciplinary team that focuses on the treatment of veterans who suffer from the spectrum of mental disorders, conduct psychological & cognitive screenings. The psychologist provides clinical assessment of patients. Through the use of structured interviews, psychological testing & careful assessment of the history presented, the psychologist renders differential diagnoses & recommends an appropriate course of treatment. This psychologist will provide the full range of psychological treatments offered to patients in need of treatment for depression, PTSD, anxiety, & related mental health problems. Examples of such treatment skills are individual psychotherapy, counseling, group therapy, along with couples & family interventions. In addition, the incumbent may employ appropriate specialized techniques, such as biofeedback, assertiveness training, relaxation training, stress & anger management techniques. The incumbent is responsible for the independent planning & provision of treatment services for those patients assigned to his/her care.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.

Education: (1) Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed AND (2) Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA. Exceptions: (A) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology & the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (B) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.

Licensure: Must possess & maintain a full, current, & restricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment physical, including the possibility of a drug screen.

English Language Proficiency: Psychologists must be proficient in spoken & written English.

EXPERIENCE:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must have two years of post-doctoral degree experience as a professional psychologist that is directly related to the duties of this position. One year of this experience must be equivalent to the GS-12 level. In addition the candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills & abilities (KSAs):

1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, a wide range of professional psychological theories & assessment methods to a variety of patient populations.
2. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies.
3. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.
4. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced professional psychological theories & techniques to the full range of patient populations.
5. Ability to provide professional advice & consultation in areas related to professional psychology & behavioral health.
6. Knowledge of clinical research literature.

Must possess & maintain a full, current, & unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation & favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE: The VA has established a Drug-Free Federal Workplace Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with the VA for a period of six months. This policy extends to random testing for the use of illegal drugs by employees who occupy testing designated positions defined as sensitive in Section 7(d) of Executive Order 12564.
