GIS Technician (Part-time)

POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
Under the general supervision of the GIS Coordinator, this position creates and maintains the geographic information system (GIS) database which includes: assembling information, verifying accuracy of data, digitizing and entering attributes data, troubleshooting GPS units, working with and verifying GPS data, and performs related work as required. (This is primarily an intern position requiring minimal experience working on a part-time basis with no benefits.)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Prepare maps and attribute data for automation into the GIS database by verifying the accuracy of original material, and coding map manuscripts with attribute data.
2. Design and complete day to day tasks such as, code and digitize maps and/or geographic feature data into various datalayers within the GIS, and perform quality control checks to insure the integrity of the database.
3. Download, transform, and use GPS data and be able to input GPS data into the GIS database.
4. Assist in troubleshooting GPS equipment while being used by city and county personnel.
5. Assist in training other department staff in the basic steps required to digitize and code maps into the GIS database.
6. Assist in training users in both the city and county of GIS databases the basic steps required retrieving information for their department's daily uses.
7. Assist in the preparation of various maps for presentation by city and county departments.
8. React to change productively and complete other tasks as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
1. Knowledge of coordinate systems and map projections.
2. Knowledge of geographic information systems.
3. Knowledge of ArcInfo, ArcEditor, and ArcView.
4. Knowledge of databases.
5. Ability to design and sequence processing tasks.
6. Ability to identify characteristics of aerial photographs and interpret maps.
7. Knowledge of global positioning systems.
8. Ability to prioritize work and give accurate completion dates.
9. Basic knowledge of computers.
10.Ability to communicate well with others.
11.Strong attention to detail necessary.
EXPERIENCE
1. None required.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES
1. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
2. Ability to use computer equipment.
3. Ability to accurately record data and complete basic mathematical calculations.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid Kansas Drivers License.
3. Clean driving record with no violations in past three years.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. None.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. This position involves work in an inside office environment and occasionally in an outside environment in varying weather conditions.
