Juvenile Intake and Assessment Officer

Job Location: Garden City, KS

Salary: 21840 - 43202

Department: Youth Services

Pay Range:
$10.50-$20.77

Position Purpose And Objectives:
This position shall complete intake procedures on those youth referred by law enforcement, parents, social services agencies, self or other entities that request intake services. This position shall provide Level II Assessment services to youth and families processed by Juvenile Intake and Assessment, juveniles assigned to Intensive Supervision Probation through the court, and juveniles who have made application for a Formal Diversion.

Essential Functions:
1. Provide crisis intervention, strength s identification, family support services, and family mediation to at-risk youth and their families.
2. Screen juveniles taken into custody and assist law enforcement officers in placement options of juvenile offenders and child in need of care youth.
3. Develop and maintain current and accurate record system of juvenile offenders and all pertinent information according to standards established by the 25th Judicial District Youth Services and/or the Juvenile Justice Authority.
4. Shall be required to use the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Questionnaire (JIAQ).
5. Required to use the Problem Oriented Screening Instrument for Teens (POSIT), the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument-Second Version (MAYSI-2), or other screening instruments approved for use by the Juvenile Justice Authority in the State of Kansas.
6. Provide Back On Track, Level II Assessment services to youth and families processed by Juvenile Intake and Assessment.
7. Explain to the youth/parents that The PATH interdisciplinary team will review the results of the Back on Track Assessment and other available data to develop a treatment plan.
8. Work flexible schedule, as duties require.
9. Respond to change productively and complete other tasks as assigned.

General Qualifications

Knowledge And Skills:
1. Knowledge of the process of the judicial system.
2. Knowledge of utilization of community resources.
3. Knowledge of behavior including socially deviant behavior.
4. Knowledge of techniques of supervision for juvenile offenders.
5. Knowledge of criminal etiology and behavior accompanying sexual deviancy.
6. Skills in interviewing and obtaining information from juvenile offenders and people with whom the offender associates while under supervision.
7. Skills in time management, planning, work organization, job coordination, and record keeping.
8. Knowledge of effective crisis intervention techniques.
9. Bilingual preferred but not required.

Experience:
1. Minimum one-year experience in case management or related field.

Mental And Physical Abilities:
1. Ability to sit for long periods of time.
2. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
3. Ability to accurately interpret laws, policies, and regulations.
4. Ability to endure strenuous physical activity and to react calmly to dangerous situations.
5. Ability to lift and/or move items weighing in excess of thirty pounds.
6. Ability to maintain professional demeanor when working with offenders.
7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
8. Ability to set appropriate personal boundaries.

Education And Training:
1. Associates degree. A high school diploma with 2 years experience working with at-risk youth in a community setting can be substituted for degree requirement.
2. Must be at least 21 years of age.
3. Must have a valid Kansas driver license.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
1. None.

Working Conditions:
1. This position involves work in an inside office environment.
2. Stressful situations may occur when dealing with the public.
3. This position is frequently exposed to highly contagious and communicable diseases and viruses.
