Duties:
Performs comprehensive professional nursing duties in the capacity as Head Nurse with assigned responsibility for operational management of all nursing services provided in a hospital ward of a military treatment facility. Performs management and supervision over nursing service personnel in their performance of professional, paraprofessional and support assignments. Ensures nursing care is implemented IAW clinical, medical, medico-legal, requirements, nursing standards, policies and regulatory controls and protocols. Consults with the Chief, Nursing Operations regarding nursing activities, changes in policies, protocols, nursing services and administrative activities affecting day-to-day nursing operations. Serves as immediate supervisor/rater for military and civilian nurses, para-professional and administrative personnel assigned to the unit. Gives advice, counsel or instruction to employees on both technical and administrative matters.

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A. Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
B. Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, DC, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the US.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicant must possess one year of specialized experience which equipped the applicant with professional knowledge of nursing principles, practices and processes to direct and manage nursing services for an entire ward during the assigned shift, and to serve as a nurse consultant for health care providers, professional, and paraprofessional nursing personnel assigned to the ward. Ability, as gained from extensive nursing experience and advanced level assignments, to resolve problem situations without compromise to the patient, visitor, staff and their families. Skill in written and oral communication to give organized meaningful and understandable information presentations to hospital officials, medical staff, patients and their families. Ability to supervise and carry out personnel management duties and responsibilities.

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education. Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.

- Personnel security investigation required.
