23%-25% COLA will be added to the base salary for the states of Alaska and Hawaii.
Appropriate overseas COLA may be added to the base salary for overseas locations.

Duties: As a dental assistant, may perform any or all of the following duties in providing assistance in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, surgical, endodontic, and periodontal treatment as provided in general dentistry. In addition, has clinic maintenance and record keeping responsibilities. Records information related to medical history of patient. Charts examination and treatment information as relayed by dentist on patient records.Records information from dentist on prescriptions and a variety of forms related to dental care for dentists signature. Sterilizes instruments, materials and equipment; prepares surgical trays. Maintains dental equipment in a clean and operative condition; properly stores and maintains adequate levels of supplies.Prepares and arranges all instruments and materials needed for each treatment; prepares patient and operatory.Assists dentist at chairside as anticipated or required in all phases of general dentistry.

    General Schedule
  • NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as DENTAL radiographers. GS-4 applicants must have 26 weeks of specialized experience and 26 weeks of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. GS-5 applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level. GS-6 level applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level.

    Specialized experience: includes: providing assistance in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, surgical, endodontic, and periodontal treatment as provided in general dentistry.

    General Experience: (1) Work that demonstrates the applicants ability to perform the work of the position as shown under the Duties section or (2) experience as a trainee, performing a variety of record-keeping and clinic maintenance duties such as: cleans dental equipment,sorts and counts containers of dental supplies and materials; files and retrieves patient records and radiographs alphabetically and numerically, disposes of used materials, and observes dental assistants performing chair-side duties.

    EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:is made in accordance with OPM Operating Manual Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, i.e., For GS-4: Successful completion of a 2-year dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Associations Commission on Accreditation which included at least 12 semester hours of courses such as: radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting. For GS-5 Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in a dental assistant hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hrs. in the above listed courses.
