Duties: Performs a variety of routine and more complex radiographic examinations. Receives patient, explains method of procedure, positions patient, selects and sets technical factors, prepares and adjusts accessory equipment required, and makes exposures necessary for the requested procedures. Independently make routine radiographic examinations of skull, thoracic, abdominal, spinal, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries. Operates portable radiographic equipment and performs operating room radiography. Prepares and administers contrast material orally, by enema, or, under close control of radiologist, intravenously. As required by procedure or patient's condition, monitors vital signs such as heart beat and notifies radiologist of significant changes. Performs examinations of head, trunk and extremities for routine physical examinations and for diagnosis of illness or of injuries of accident victims.
About the Position: Uses the Digital Imaging Network Picture Archive System to electronically transfer patient exams when properly requested. Assist in Training new personnel on equipment and procedures to ensure competency is met. In the absence of the Quality Assurance Tech, performs the required daily test on the processors, documenting the acquired data from the densitometer accurately.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work is performed under the supervision of the radiologists. The work requires long periods of standing and walking. There is some bending, lifting and carrying of moderately heavy items. Positioning of unconscious or disabled patients requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education AND be certified radiographers.
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Qualifying educational programs for radiography and radiation therapy technology are available in accredited colleges, universities, hospitals, medical schools, or postsecondary technical or vocational schools. Education or training from programs based in hospitals must have been from those hospitals that were accredited at the time of the education or training by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals or by the American Osteopathic Association.
You MUST indicate the year of your degree(s), number of hours, the overall GPA for your undergraduate course work, the name of the university or college, the type of degree and in what area. If selected, you will be required to submit a certified copy of your transcripts before a starting date is set.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position, such as:
- Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes, effects of radiation on living organisms, and the effects of x-ray technique on patient and operator exposure in order to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained, recognize when changes of equipment or procedures might result in increased exposures, and recommend methods to prevent such exposure.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology such as location, appearance, and function of various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination in order to interpret the examination request accurately.
- Knowledge of pediatric radiography including methods of handling children, special equipment available, and protective measures to be applied in order to get satisfactory radiography without unnecessary radiation exposure.
CERTIFICATION: Applicant MUST be a certified radiologic technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists .

GS-06 and above: One year of experience directly related to this occupation equivalent to the next lower grade. Graduate education or an internship meets the experience required when it is directly related to the work of the position.
Work requires standing, stooping, bending, climbing, crawling, and kneeling for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. Worker may lift and move materials weighing up to 40 pounds and, occasionally heavier items with assistance.

Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest.
