Operations Manager Toledo, OR

Position Summary:

Georgia-Pacific is seeking an Operations Manager for a fully integrated containerboard mill operation in Toledo, Oregon. This position has operational responsibility for these operating areas: kraft pulping, OCC pulping, paper machines and power recovery. This position reports directly to the facility Vice-President/General Manager and leads the operations group to achieve safety, environmental, reliability, cost management and quality excellence. The Operations Manager will work with employees to develop a culture defined by Georgia-Pacifics guiding principles, and to grow the teams ability to understand and apply MBM (Market Based Management) philosophy and tools within the business.

Georgia-Pacifics Toledo operations produces an array of linerboard and corrugated medium. Its customer base includes external customers and internal GP box plants. The Toledo mill, which has been in operation since 1957, has the capability to produce over 850,000 tons of liner and corrugated medium each year. It has been an OSHA VPP Star site for over 10 years. It is located seven miles from the Pacific Ocean, west of Corvallis, Oregon.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Strive to make safety a shared value of all employees.

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction; develop and articulate an understanding of the mills true current state and its future state vision; develop strategies and execute plans to close the gaps.
  • Focus to achieve environmental and compliance excellence in all aspects of the operation.
  • Coach and develop employees to both support their individual growth and to enable them to contribute with long-term value creation for the organization.
  • Seek out and use the best available knowledge to advance faster than the competition.
  • Perform direct and indirect leadership responsibilities for salaried and hourly operations employees, including the development of their roles/responsibilities/expectations, performance reviews, and compensation evaluations.
  • Help create a culture that empowers employees and strives to live by the MBM Guiding Principles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in safety, papermaking, pulping, power recovery, quality, capital/maintenance investment, human resources, environmental, compliance, cost, yield.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing best practices.
  • Demonstrated skill leading others and achieving results.
  • Ability to efficiently balance multiple priorities and tasks.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop productive rapport with union leadership, mill employees, and outside leaders and customers.
  • Additional key attributes include: a strong sense of urgency; holding self and others accountable; sound judgment; innovative, economic and critical thinking skills; proactive nature and effective problem solving; good organization skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Technical Field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of supervisory and managerial experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Word (to write business correspondence), Excel (for use of spreadsheets, reporting, simple formulas) and Outlook (for internal and external correspondence).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Kraft and OCC pulping, papermaking or power recovery operating experience.
  • Experience in a heavy manufacturing or industrial environment.
