Position Summary
Repair and maintain components used for aircraft navigation and radio communications, weather radar systems, and other instruments and computers that control flight, and other primary functions. Because of the increasing use of technology, more time is spent repairing electronic systems, such as computerized controls. Must possess Radiotelephone License issued by Federal Communications Commission. May accompany flight crew to perform in-flight adjustments and to determine and record required post repair work. May sign overhaul documents for equipment replaced or repaired. May operate ground station for air-to-station check of radar or other equipment.
Responsibilities
Assembles components, such as switches, electrical controls, and junction boxes, using hand tools and soldering iron.
Connects components to assemblies, such as radio systems, instruments, inverters using hand tools and soldering iron.
Lays out installation of assemblies and systems in aircraft, according to blueprints and wiring diagrams, using scribe, scale, and protractor.
Sets up and operates ground support and test equipment to perform functional flight test of electrical and electronic systems.
Fabricates parts and test aids as required.
Interprets flight test data to diagnose malfunctions and systemic performance problems.
Installs electrical and electronic components, assemblies, and systems in aircraft, using hand tools, power tools and soldering iron.
Adjusts, repairs, or replaces malfunctioning components or assemblies, using hand tools and soldering iron.
Coordinates work with engineers, technicians, and other aircraft maintenance personnel
Keep records of maintenance and repair work
Requirements
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.

Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and model.
Skilled in determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
Skilled in controlling operations of equipment or systems.
Skilled in installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
Skilled in conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
Skilled in repairing systems using the needed tools.
Skilled in performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
Must have the ability to see details at close range.
Must have the ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
Minimum Qualifications:
Avionics Tech II- Six (6) years of work related experience and a FCC Repairman’s certificate. Demonstrated proficiency in all test equipment and complex avionics systems
Physical Requirements:
Avionics technicians often stand, lie, or kneel in awkward positions and occasionally must work in precarious positions, such as on scaffolds or ladders.
Frequently lift or pull objects weighing more than 70 pounds.
Working Conditions:
Avionics technicians usually work in hangars or in other indoor areas. When hangars are full or when repairs must be made quickly, they can work outdoors, sometimes in unpleasant weather. Avionics technicians often work under time pressure to maintain flight schedules or, in general aviation, to keep from inconveniencing customers. At the same time, avionics technicians have a tremendous responsibility to maintain safety standards, and this can cause the job to be stressful.
Noise and vibration are common when engines are being tested, so ear protection is necessary. Avionics technicians usually work 40 hours a week on 8-hour shifts around the clock. Overtime work is frequent.
