I. FUNCTION
Working under the general supervision of the assigned school administrator, the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant reports directly to the supervising registered occupational therapist (OTR), and works closely with all members of the Special Education Team in order to implement services for students with disabilities.
II. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Implement age-appropriate treatment activities based on the OTR’s assessment and with the supervision of an OTR
• Assist the OTR with gathering appropriate data for assessments
• Complete documentation requirements and correspondence with team members
• Support and interact with the supervising OTR and team members
• Use available space and resources to deliver limited occupational therapy (OT) services
• Understand special education and general education teacher/student interactions in order to foster instruction in the least restrictive environment (LRE)
• Use knowledge of positioning and handling techniques in order to foster student independence and LRE instruction
• Support team members and family members as needed to foster student independence and LRE instruction
• Encourage family involvement and family advocacy
• Comply and act in accordance with the Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy professional ethical standards in the provision of limited OT services.
III. QUALIFICATIONS
• Associate of Science Occupational Therapy Assistant degree.
• Possess current Maryland State Licensure OR a temporary license from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Applicants hired with a temporary license must receive a regular license within three months of their start date.
• Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal laws that pertain to the provision of OT services within the school setting.
• Demonstrated evidence of successful interpersonal skills that will enable the candidate to communicate with peers, central office staff, school personnel, MSDE staff, federal auditors and the community.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Evidence of strong clinical reasoning skills.
IV. Salary
This is a 10-month position, Grade 21 on the Central Office Technical Salary Scale. The salary range for the 2009/2010 school year for this position is $33,171 - $50,350. Salary placement will be in conjunction with the salary procedures of The Howard County Public School System.
