Job Description:
The Coder Abstractor works under the supervision of the Manager-Coding and Team Leader-Health Information Services, the employee validates the CPT and ICD-9 codes for all provider services.
Performs other duties as assigned.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Employee in this position perform the following technical competencies:
Codes and abstracts all patient medical records using encoder and current edition coding books, assigning CPT, ICD-9, HCPCS and appropriate modifiers.
Performs quality checks on records.
Works reports to locate all codeable records and to encourage physician completion.
Communicates with physicians on coding questions and problems.
Educates physicians on documentation and coding issues.
Participates in process improvement teams.
Listens to dictated reports utilizing the listen feature.
Updates chart deficiency software.
Works closely with PFS and compliance departments to ensure accurate reimbursement.
Remains up to date on coding guidelines by reading and completing modules in MC Strategies website.
Completes physician coding queries and documents in DRG database.
Corrects rejected/denied accounts, appealing as necessary.
Works with departments to ensure accurate coding.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
High School graduate; concentration of science courses. Medical Terminology required. Must have coding experience or education.
LICENSURE:
CCS-P, CPC, RHIT or RHIA required or must have obtained within first year of employment.
EXPERIENCE:
One year experience in a Health Information Services department performing a job that requires detail, familiarity with patient medical record preferred. QuadraMed encoder experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS:
Input and retrieve data, speaking clearly, calibrating equipment, answering phones, precise handeye coordination, fine motor skills and good writing skills.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must be courteous; work in a professional, caring manner with internal and external customers; have the ability to work with interruptions, and flexibility in hours and workflow, foster teamwork and promote service and quality in everything.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must have the ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES:
Must interpret data from chart, analyze encoder instructions, understand what physician is trying to convey and concentrate for long time periods.
ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to visualize/interpret patient record.
