Job Description:
Works under the supervision of the Team Leader, to process tissue specimens for examination by the pathologists, maintain the areas used for tissue examinations, perform special stains, maintain an accurate log of the specimens, maintain files of blocks and tissue slides, monitor the supplies and reagents as necessary and Rotates autopsy call. Gives excellent customer service.
Performs other duties as assigned.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Employee in this position perform the following technical competencies:
Embed, section, make slides, stain, coverslip, and label tissues for examination by the pathologists.
Inventory, order, and stock supplies and clean pathology grossing areas, frozen section rooms, autopsy rooms, histology area and maintain all equipment.
Perform special stains as directed by the pathologists.
Perform computer operations necessary to enter patient information, order tests and charge for procedures.
Prepare, and maintain the quality of cytology stains and reagents.
Maintain files of tissue blocks and slides.
Take telephone calls and prepare specimens for send out.
Participate in inter and intra departmental meetings.
Ensures competency testing is given to department staff. Keep policy and procedures current for the department.
Assist with autopsies with the pathologist and other duties as required.
Communicate effectively with staff while maintaining patient and staff confidentiality. Gives excellent customer service.
Pick up specimen from surgery and GI Lab as needed.
Job Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
High School graduate plus 2 years of full-time experience in a Histopathology Laboratory, under the supervision of a certified pathologist. - OR - Associate degree plus 1-year experience as above.
LICENSURE:
HT(ASCP) preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
6-8 week orientation and training period.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS:
Precise hand/ eye coordination is necessary to prepare and process specimens.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Effective communication skills and ability to interact with patients, staff, visitors, physicians, etc. Must work well as a team member.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to move between lab and other departments. Ability to stand and or sit for long periods of time while working at instruments. Ability to bend and or sit, stoop and lift 20-30 pounds.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES:
Ability to follow rules instructions such as procedures for processing specimens.
ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to see and to distinguish color.
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:
Infectious body fluids, hazardous chemicals and fumes.
