JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Registered Respiratory Therapist works under the supervision of Team Leader. Administers nebulizer treatments, chest physiotherapy, and other various therapy. Ventilator setup and management. Draws ABG's and analyze. Evaluates all patients in the system that are ordered on respiratory therapy of any kind. Initiates patient and family education on respiratory medications, home equipment use and disease processes.
Performs other duties as assigned.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Employee in this position perform the following technical competencies:
Demonstrates technical and professional competence in high-risk procedures.
Applies knowledge of various developmental stages in the planning and implementations of care of each patient.
Provides quality care and professionalism to all patients at Heartland Health.
Performs the full range of respiratory therapy functions: O2/aerosol therapy, nebulizer treatments, chest physiotherapy and postural drainage, wright peak flow, suctioning, ambulating with oxygen, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gases (including femoral artery in emergency situation), respiratory protocols, incentive spirometry, flutter valve and PEP therapy, Pflex therapy
Sets up and manages equipment with patients including Bi-PAP systems, ventilators and overnight oximeters.
Instructs and educates patients regarding therapy and home equipment use and cleaning.
Charts all patient treatments, procedures, and completes all charges in the computer.
Responds to Code blue and Traumas, perform BLS and other emergency situations.
Assesses patients clinically and informs physician about pertinent patient data/condition analysis.
Transports patients on ventilators and oxygen.
Checks and stocks equipment.
Assists in trials and recommendations of new products.
Assists co-workers as appropriate (Graduates and Students).
Cleans and processes respiratory equipment.
Instructs patients and family members on breathing techniques and equipment.
Participates in system and community activities as requested.
Participates in organizational committees and task forces as requested.
Serves as a proctor to respiratory students as requested.
Job Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Completion of Registry Program.
LICENSURE:
Registered Respiratory Therapist - NBRC credentials. Licensed in State of Missouri, RCP, BLS certification; in addition ACLS - Emergency Services and ICU; NRP required for staff taking Nursery call.
EXPERIENCE:
1-month department orientation.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS:
Detailed knowledge of Respiratory therapy equipment and procedures. Good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medications and general nursing. Detailed knowledge of specialized equipment and troubleshooting. Good mechanical skills in working with equipment. Computer skills and knowledge.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Communicates/interacts with physician, patient, family, nursing and other departments.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
High level of manual dexterity and able to lift 40 pounds and push 250 pounds. Hearing, speech and vision must be adequate to perform essential functions of the job.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES:
Must be at a high level to perform essential function of the job.
