Palm Valley Animal Center (PVAC) is an open admission shelter located in Edinburg TX, serving the Rio Grande Valley. Seeing over 30,000 animals per year, PVAC has increased its live release rate from 35% to almost 70% in the past year and is looking to increase that number even further! PVAC is seeking a staff veterinarian to join our medical team and provide medical and surgical services to our shelter animals. Help our team on our journey to no-kill and be part of a change with national media attention.

Essential Primary Duties:
  • Work with Lead Veterinarian to develop and execute shelter medicine plan focusing on population health management.
  • Examining and managing medical cases within the shelter and in the foster system.
  • Perform high-volume, high-quality spay neuter for shelter and owned animals.
  • Perform other surgeries as needed for shelter/rescue animals.
  • Monitor daily health of shelter animals, with Lead Veterinarian, covering three facilities.
  • Health certificates for animals traveling between states with our rescue/transport department
  • Educate and train shelter staff in various aspects of animal care (informal and formal settings)
  • Enter all data (medical and other) into Petpoint.
  • Other duties as required by the Lead Veterinarian and Executive Director

Experience / Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD) or equivalent required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a license in good standing with state veterinary board upon hire.
  • Experience or passion to learn in the field of shelter medicine, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter and herd medicine.
  • High volume/High-quality spay/neuter surgical experience preferred, but willing to train
  • Understanding and ability to perform herd medicine practice.
  • License or application for license with Drug Enforcement Agency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with direct manager and internal staff on all levels. Proven written and oral presentation skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
  • Lifting animals of all sizes, bending, stooping and walking on a daily basis.
  • Willing to work with shelter animals in outdoor kennels in the heat of South Texas
