Description:
Hubbell Power Systems (HPS) is a leader in the manufacture and distribution of a wide variety of transmission, distribution, substation, OEM and telecommunications products used by utilities. In addition, HPS products are used in the civil construction, transportation, gas and water industries. Products include construction and switching products, tools, insulators, arresters, pole line hardware, cable accessories, connectors, test equipment, transformer bushings and polymer precast enclosures and equipment pads.

HPS recognized brands include Anderson, Chance, CDR, Delmar, Electro Composites, Hipotronics, Hubbell Cable Accessories, Fargo, Ohio Brass, PCORE, Polycast, Quazite and USCO with combined service to customers for more than 100 years with quality, innovative products.

Currently HPS has an opening in their Lenoir City, Tennessee facility, for a Product Manager.

The Product Manager is responsible for management of the Enclosure business unit of product lines as assigned and worldwide profits or losses for those lines. Development of new markets for existing products. Generates new product ideas and follow through with development that may include establishing marketing policies such as pricing, promotion and resolving product concerns. Collaboratively works with members of the marketing department, sales, customer service, and operations to ensure continuity in product offering and company goals. Adheres to and promotes Hubbell values by performing duties in a manner that is consistent with being a team leader and supports the continued growth of the company.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the Enclosure Group Product Line Strategy – The Product Manager will participate in creating the vision and strategic direction for assigned product lines. He/she will provide leadership in maintaining profitability with current customers and products as well as develop strategies for profitable growth through new products, market expansion, and channel & distribution options.
    • Identify product opportunities in the marketplace through competitive analysis, customer analysis, focus groups and other means. Regularly track the competitive landscape and identify industry trends or specific actions of competitors. Segment the trade markets, identify related applications, and develop products and strategies for each.
    • Develop plans to increase sales of existing products. These plans will include plans to differentiate products from the competition and specification development initiatives that lead to brand preference by the specifying and buying community.
    • Product Line P&L – Track the various product lines’ business performance to budget. Make recommendations to senior management for improving sales and profits.
    • Business Plans – Key leader in developing annual product line business plans and budgets.
    • Responsible for developing and implementing pricing strategies to maximize profit. Regularly perform pricing and competitive analysis by customer channel and recommend strategies to improve market position, improve quality, increase margin, or reduce costs.
    • Facilitate and manage communications both internally and externally for all new products or product changes. Strong communication skills are a must to be able to move projects through cross-functional teams.
    • Be the expert in the brand’s end users, contractors, distributors, competitors and markets, as well as monitoring key trends that may affect the brand, to recommend new breakthrough ideas for the business.
    • Participate in cross-functional teams for manufacturing scheduling, controlling costs, and controlling quality of the product.
  • Product Development – The Product Manager is responsible for understanding new product requirements from the market and existing customers, and translating them into detailed business opportunities by channel of distribution and by customer segment. The Product Manager will present and justify new business initiatives and proposals to the Director of Marketing. He/she will develop a comprehensive, prioritized product line strategy.
    • Manage all aspects of product development, product changes and product promotions including new product development, intelligence gathering, supplier sourcing, competitive costing, product installation procedures, mapping of new product into catalog stream, packaging, labeling, forecasting, development of collateral materials for product launch, pricing, catalog and data sheet copy, training materials.
    • New Product Planning – partner with the Director of Marketing to ensure new products meet financial hurdles, request development resources on the new product critical path plan, and establish target end users, contractors and distributors. Establish inventory requirements, capital requirements, new product launch plans, etc.
    • Responsible for developing business case for investing in product development projects.
    • Act as engineering liaison in development of new products.
    • Develop a marketing strategy for the product as it fits into the overall product line plan, including how to promote, price product for each channel trade.
    • Manage life cycle of products and introduction through phase-out. Perform product rationalization to meet customer demand while maximizing profitability.
    • Close the loop on new and existing products by analyzing returns and customer feedback and prioritizing quality improvement plans and problem resolution.
    • Assist Hubbell Power Systems Legal in the clearance of product names; trademarks clearance and renewals.
    • Communicate with internal and external organizations on product launch details.
  • Other Marketing
    • Own the development and delivery of product sales tools such as catalogs, price sheets, product demos, product presentations, sales proposal templates, competitive sales tools, Web pages, trade show booths and white papers.
    • Produce, maintain and update annual forecast. Develop and maintain competitor profiles.
    • Evaluate and recommend promotional opportunities that would optimize ROI, including but not limited to trade advertising, trade show participation, direct mail, telemarketing, etc.
    • Support sales efforts, both direct and indirect, by providing sales tools and marketing collateral, and actively engaging with customers as needed.
    • Establish consistent messaging.
    • Own the development of consistent product messaging, providing clear value distinction in the market, and communicating it to the rest of the organization, including customer service, sales, HPS media center and IT.
    • Provide a network for communicating with the sales (domestic and international) force.
    • Assist customer service on product application, customer problems, and opportunities.
    • Train the organization on new products and new product messaging.
    • Manage life cycle of products and introduction through phase-out. Perform product rationalization to meet customer demand while maximizing profitability.
    • Work with the Director of Marketing to perform analysis of potential promotions, and determine metrics for success of past and current promotions.
    • Act as a resource for any operational, sales channel or marketing questions.
    • Train sales channels on all aspects of the product including key applications.
    • Performs other related duties and assignments as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to travel on business related trips, 25% travel (strategic new product launches may require 50% travel); ability to move to various locations within the Company; ability to communicate; ability to work on a personal computer or other related equipment as required.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
BS degree in business, engineering, or marketing (MBA is a plus) plus 5 years of experience with general product/project development, preferably in the electrical distribution or telecommunications OSP market place. Exposure to the electrical utility and distribution sales channel is a plus. Must have excellent proficiency in Power Point, Word, and Excel. Very strong analytical, communication and presentation skills required. An attention to detail and appreciation of deadlines is essential.
