Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:
- Master’s degree from an American Board of Genetic counseling (ABGC) accredited genetic counseling program.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Access and Powerpoint.
- Bilingual in Spanish.
Required Certification/Licensing:
- Eligible for Certification by American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must pass boards within 3 years of hire.
- Maintains board eligibility and, once board certified, fulfills CEU requirements.
Job Summary:
The genetic counselor functions in clinical, research, and educational capacities for medical genetics services at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance):
1. Provides medical genetics consultation with diagnosis and management to a variety of ambulatory patients from, but not limited to, community pediatricians, obstetricians, reproductive endocrinologists and internists, pediatric sub-specialists, the Institute for Child Development, Tomorrows Children’s Institute, and The Cancer Center.
2. Provides inpatient consultation to the neonatal intensive care unit, women’s and children’s pediatric floors, and adult medicine.
3. Provides consultation to patients from Maternal Fetal Medicine.
4. Coordinates genetic testing and specimen transport.
5. Provides genetic input to case management with regard to fetal autopsy/loss and other studies..
6. Participates in the Judy Center for Down Syndrome.
7. Provides education resources for genetic information to medical community at HUMC and the grand rounds in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, and internal medicine.
8. Provides genetic lectures and education to the community.
9. Provides education case conferences in Institute for Child development and Tomorrows Children’s Institute and lectures to medical students/residents.
10. Participates in case conferences, special committees related to clinical care and interdepartmental rounds.
11. Develops programs with various departments as they may relate to genetics.
12. Provides continued clinical research in regards to genetic syndromes, management and genetic testing and identifies new areas of research endeavors.
13. Prepares and writes articles for publication in professional journals.
14. Oversees graduate level genetic counseling students.
15. Develops and leads patient support groups.
