Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Entry level: 0-2 years experience.
Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred:
3 or more years experience in a hospital or medical center blood bank.
ASCP or equivalent
eligible.
Job Summary:
The Blood Bank Medical Technologist is responsible for performing and recording blood bank procedures that encompass a broad range of sophistication and assisting in quality control studies, research and development of new procedures, teaching of students and orientation of new personnel.
Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance):
1. Performs all routine and special procedures in Blood Bank.
2. Ensures the disposition of blood and blood components.
3. Maintains inventory of blood and blood components.
4. Ensures accurate and legible reporting.
5. Performs daily and external quality control and documents any corrective action when QC is out of range.
6. Performs monthly and quarterly quality control and preventive maintenance and documents any corrective action taken.
7. Assists with clinical orientation of new employees, assists with the instruction of MLT students.
8. Maintains and orders inventory of supplies and reagents.
9. Assists in the evaluation of new products and/or reagents and new techniques.
10. Performs all system functions necessary to achieve timely reporting of results.
11. Assumes the responsibilities of the Section Head on weekends and holidays and in the absence of both the section head and assistant section head when required.
12. Performs supervisory duties of senior technologist for the Department of Pathology on weekends and holidays as required.
