Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred:
Minimum of Associates degree in Health Information or Allied Health, Bachelors preferred or comparable coding experience in a complex healthcare environment. Demonstrated expertise in Medial Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and inpatient coding. Encoder usage required with proficiency in computer skills
Associates/Bachelors degree/CCS and/or 4-9 years experience coding inpatient and same day stay cases
Preferred Certification/Licensing:
RHIA or RHIT, CCS or other Allied Health credential with inpatient coding experience
Job Summary:
To assign principle diagnosis, co-morbidities, complications and chronic conditions found in inpatient and Same Day Surgery cases to the highest specificity utilizing the currently mandated coding systems in accordance with CMS and other coding compliance regulations.
Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance):
1. Assigns ICD-9-CM or HCPCS codes creating APC or DRG group assignments. Abstracts pertinent information from patient records.
2. Provide guidance to Clinical Documentation Specialists by furnishing clinical input as necessary, in addition to education regarding applicable coding clinics or coding guidelines.
3. Analyze clinical data of CDMP Severity Complexity worksheets and apply a tracking code.
4. Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for coding purposes.
5. Apply POA indicators on all inpatient charts.
6. Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements, new technology and procedures as well as CMS approved clinical trials. Brings identified concerns to supervisor or department manager for resolution.
7. Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as ser forth by the American Health Information Management Association and adheres to official coding guidelines.
8. Data enters coded/abstracted information for APC and DRG assignment into the Medical Center computer system.
9. Checks submitted count against case list to insure receipt and completion of records. Notifies Coding Supervisor of records not received.
