Job Description:
Iowa State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine. The Chair serves as the administrator for the department. The departmental mission emphasizes the advancement of basic and applied microbiological sciences through programs in research, education, and outreach in animal and human health, with an emphasis on infectious, zoonotic and emerging diseases, and food security/safety. The chair also provides leadership to facilitate high academic standards in veterinary and graduate student education.
The candidate will be expected to continue active scholarly activity in an area of research consistent with the college and departmental missions. The candidate must possess a nationally recognized record of scholarly activity in research and the rank of tenured professor or qualifications for promotion to the rank of tenured professor. Demonstration of strong interpersonal, communicative and organizational skills, and the ability to effectively network with other departments, professional organizations, and grant funding sources are required. The candidate must understand the multifaceted role of the department in fulfilling the mission of a land grant university.
The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventative Medicine consists of 19 professional staff, 59 graduate students, and 19 faculty, many of whom are diplomates. The Department has several research focus areas including zoonotic and emerging diseases, basic microbiological sciences, production animal infectious diseases, and food safety and security, and public health. The research programs of the faculty are well funded from agencies including CDC, NIH, NSF, DoD, USDA and private industry. The Department offers the MS and PhD degrees, and the faculty participate in a number of interdepartmental, interdisciplinary campus-wide graduate programs.

The College of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1879, and has five academic departments, six interdisciplinary programs, three centers/institutes, a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and a veterinary teaching hospital. It includes 102 tenure-track faculty and currently has 393 DVM students and 106 graduate students working toward the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The USDA National Animal Disease Center, National Veterinary Services Laboratories, and the Center for Veterinary Biologics within Ames provide distinctive educational and research opportunities.
Required Qualifications:
PhD or equivalent terminal degree in microbiology, immunology, or a related discipline; experience that demonstrates an established record in research; the rank of tenured professor or qualifications for promotion to the rank of tenured professor; and strong interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
DVM, MD, or equivalent degree; diplomate status; administrative experience, including budget and personnel management; demonstrated capacity to effectively network within and outside the university.
