Job Description
The Iowa State University Library is seeking an e-Library Coordinator to oversee web design and the development of public and staff interfaces to the e-Library. This highly complex website uses both locally-developed programs and commercial software (including the SirsiDynix Horizon Library Management System and multiple Ex Libris products) to provide access to a wide variety of library collections and services.
A new position reporting to the Library's Associate Dean for Research & Access, this individual will design, develop, manage, assess, and continuously improve the presentation of web-based content and services to library users, both internal and external. At the same time, s/he will work collaboratively with the Library's Information Technology (IT) Officer and IT staff as they develop and manage the website infrastructure. In this dual role, the position is seen as a creative pivot between traditional public service and IT divisions of the library. Technical responsibilities include web and graphic design, website development and maintenance, multimedia development, and possibly some programming and database work (collaboratively with IT staff).
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field and three years of experience in a web design/production/development environment.
Experience using HTML/XHTML coding, CSS, XML, Ajax, and scripting languages, with the ability to completely separate markup from presentation. Demonstrated ability to organize, categorize, and structure information into an intuitive and easy-to-use web interface. Experience working independently, collaboratively in groups, and as a project manager.
Preferred Qualifications
Training or experience that demonstrate:
-Advanced knowledge of web design and multimedia software applications in an Apache environment
-Experience in the use of a content management system
-Working knowledge of major web browser characteristics and compatibility issues.
-Experience with audio and video codecs and image file formats
-Experience planning and managing web services in an academic or research library, or in a research environment.
-Working knowledge of standard library metadata formats such as Dublin Core, MARC, etc.
-Experience with open-URL and federated search products such as SFX and MetaLib.
-Basic understanding of relational databases, query languages, and middleware; security pitfalls and secure coding techniques; the collection of search and usage data; the selection and acquisition of hardware and software; and basic web server configuration options.
Salary
Minimum $40,906; commensurate with qualifications
