Job Description
Bacterial Microbiologist and Molecular Diagnostician. The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University invites applications for a faculty position in diagnostic bacteriology and clinical microbiology. The position is offered at the rank of Clinician/ Senior Clinician (non-tenure track) /Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (tenure track). The appointment will be in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) within the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.

The ISU VDL provides multi-species diagnostic testing, evaluation, and surveillance on approximately 45,000 diagnostic cases annually. The diagnostic bacteriology and clinical microbiology sections conduct over 100,000 tests annually; microbiological support for 15-20 ongoing research projects; and diagnostic investigations for a wide range of species, including production animals, companion animals, equine, wildlife, and exotics.

The primary emphasis of this position is professional practice and research related to bacteriology and molecular diagnostic medicine. Professional service responsibilities will include supervision and management of a team of faculty, research associates, and technicians in diagnostic bacteriology and clinical microbiology; delivery of reports and casework interpretation to laboratory clients; implementation of quality assurance/quality control programs; and validation and implementation of new diagnostic tests. The successful candidate will develop a primary research focus in diagnostic and molecular bacteriology and independent or collaborative research in food safety, anti-microbial resistance, bacterial molecular pathogenesis, or pertinent areas in food supply veterinary medicine. Numerous opportunities for collaborative research are available within the department, college, university, and the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. The successful candidate will also participate in training graduate students, residents, and senior veterinary students at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Required Qualifications
Clinician: advanced degree (MS or PhD) in microbiology or a related discipline.
Senior Clinician: advanced degree (MS or PhD) in microbiology or a related discipline and 6 years experience in diagnostic medicine or a related field.
Assistant Professor: PhD or equivalent degree in microbiology (emphasis in bacteriology) or a related discipline.
Associate Professor: PhD or equivalent degree in microbiology (emphasis in bacteriology) or a related discipline, a minimum of 6 years experience in diagnostic medicine or a related field, and demonstrated scholarly activity.
Professor: PhD or equivalent degree in microbiology (emphasis in bacteriology) or a related discipline, a minimum of 10 years experience in diagnostic medicine or a related field, and demonstrated scholarly activity of national recognition.

Preferred Qualifications
DVM or equivalent degree, board certification (or board eligible) in microbiology or a related field; post doctoral experience in classical and molecular microbiology, and in depth knowledge of food animal production and diseases.
