Shift: Permanent, 12 Months, Full Time, 40 hours/week, First Shift, Work Hours 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday

Job Description
Perform technical and allied duties related to the function of the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory pathology and histopathology sections. Collect samples; unpack and process mailed-in tissues cases submitted for routine and specific tests, research projects, and surveillance; and conduct critical specimen collections for zoonotic diseases such as rabies according to established policies, procedures, or protocols. Unload dead and live animals; assist in euthanasia and necropsy; clean the necropsy floor, biosecurity areas and equipment; distribute freight and laboratory supplies; extract brains for rabies testing; collect bronchoalveolar lavages; and discard trash. Prepare tissues from animals for histopathologic examination, trim tissues for slide creation, prepare tissues, label slides and cassettes, perform clerical tasks, file slides and cassettes, fill formalin jars for daily use, and clean lab workspace.

Required Qualifications
1. Two years of related laboratory experience including one year as a Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level experience, or 2. Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification, or 3. Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be able to handle and pick up 50 pounds frequently. Must have excellent hand-to-eye coordination and accurate color recognition. Ability to communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions on a normal basis for daily activities.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology and basic animal anatomy. Working knowledge of animal handling and livestock industry.

Salary
Entry hourly salary: $13.32 ($13.72 effective July 1)
