Job Description
The African American Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at Iowa State University invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the level of assistant professor or associate professor. Each appointment will be in both the African American Studies Program and in one of the following academic departments in the LAS College, which will serve as the tenure home: Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology.
For Position 1, we seek scholars with a teaching and research emphasis on the African Diaspora/Black Atlantic world, broadly conceptualized, from any disciplinary perspective listed above.
For Position 2, we seek scholars with a teaching and research emphasis in other areas of specialization within African American Studies, again from any disciplinary perspective listed above.
The new faculty members will sustain an active program of scholarship in their area of specialization, teach courses in the program and in the tenure-home department, and function as mentors and role models for African American students.
The African American Studies program is one of four ethnic studies programs in the LAS College's new Center for American Intercultural Studies (with American Indian Studies, U.S. Latino/a Studies, and Asian American Studies).
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have expertise in African American Studies and demonstrate potential for mentoring African American students, and have a Ph.D. by August 16, 2009 in a discipline appropriate for one of the following departments: Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology. Candidates for an assistant professor position must demonstrate potential for excellence in research and teaching, and candidates for an associate professor position must have a record of excellence in research and teaching.
