Job Description: The APL Technology Leadership Scholars (ATLAS) program identifies students at selected colleges and universities, i.e., Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MIs), who have distinguished themselves academically and are highly motivated to participate in this technology leadership development program. This highly competitive program screens and selects an outstanding student from each of the designated institutions, based on the established criteria, to work during the summer in the Laboratory's technical departments. The ATLAS Program offers well-qualified, highly motivated undergraduates interested in applied scientific research the opportunity to participate in independent, interdisciplinary work between their junior and senior years. Students selected as ATLAS scholars participate in a highly structured 12-week period of intensive research, professional growth, and leadership development. Following orientation, students are assigned to work with APL staff members who are recognized discipline experts in the student's academic major. The ATLAS scholars work with their staff member on a current project to experience various exploratory techniques and demonstrate technical proficiency. During the 12-week period, they also participate in professional development seminars and leadership training workshops. Field trips and dialogue sessions complete their experience at APL as ATLAS scholars. ATLAS scholars are teamed with an APL staff scientist or engineer who is currently conducting research or program evaluation in their academic major. Students use the latest technology, established research protocols, and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. This teaming allows ATLAS scholars to demonstrate their academic competency and to hone their problem-solving skills and techniques. This also affords an opportunity for them to pursue solutions to real issues affecting the nation. Students receive a stipend for full-time summer intern salary support including standard holidays. In addition to the summer salary, the ATLAS scholars receive round-trip travel expenses to APL. Learn more about the ATLAS Program at http://www.jhuapl.edu/employment/diversity/atlas.asp
