Job Description:
This position (Senior Research Engineer) works under the supervision of the Manager of Materials Research and Development. The employee works closely with manufacturing and marketing to transfer technology from R & D to manufacturing using Kennametals ACE (Acquiring Competitive Edge) process and understand the customer needs. Projects are generally defined by the policies for AMSG and R & D and realized through ACE process; are reviewed as required by ACE process. The position requires meticulous planning and execution of projects and the ability to complete short-term work assignments independently. The senior research engineer is responsible for the development of specifications and quality control procedures for $1.5 million of raw materials used in the Mining and Construction division which has a business of about $150 million. The senior research engineer works on the project which would increase the sales of mining and construction division by about $ 1 million. The position also supports the customer worth $40 million business, through new product development and technical support. Development of patented technology: Develop new manufacturing processes and new generation of products replacing existing ones and for new applications to gain market share and increase profitability. Technical support for manufacturing on the issues related to steels: Troubleshoot process errors, establish processing parameters and implement new manufacturing practices. Technical support to customers: Provide failure analysis, technical field support, and help in implementing new technology. Participation in technical meetings and conferences: Present new research findings and demonstrate technical strength of the company to the industrial world. Steel and carbide metallography support. SEM operation. CAD and finite element analysis.
Experience and Skills:
Must be able to coordinate and execute longer-term team projects independently; gives technical direction to lower level engineers and A&T personnel in project work. Alternatively, candidate is highly skilled in the technical discipline important to Kennametal, and uses those skills and extensive experience in providing technical support to others. Has the responsibility to accomplish project objectives and to stay within project budget limits. Above-average communication skills are required for project leadership. Typically, senior engineers have a Ph.D., plus two (2) years and graduates specializing in Advanced Ceramics and Composites, or a M.S. degree and about four (4) years of relevant experience, or a B.S. degree with about seven (7) or more years experience in cemented carbides is a plus. Technical writing and communication skills are required.
