Job Description:
The Quality Manager reports to Rogers Site Manager. The responsibilities and goals are based on the strategic plan for the fiscal year. The PPM and ISO process will provide the requirements and goals for accomplishment for the fiscal year and the quarterly review will adjust objectives as needed. Quarterly Quality Management Reviews will also provide direction. There is a minimal amount of daily direct supervision given. Travel will be 10% to other Kennametal facilities and customer sites.
The impact of quality assurance on the business is a crucial part of customer satisfac-tion. It influences cost of goods through scrap reduction and better manufacturing practices which results in lower inspection costs and lower manufacturing costs.
Quality assurance influences cost of goods purchased as well as sold. Through approved sources, purchased goods alleviate cost of in-coming inspections and reduce repair or rework to nonconforming material.
Scrap reduction efforts are expected to reduce scrap costs by 25%.
The Quality related Keys to Operational Excellence are expected to improve by 25% in each measured business.
Responsible for directing the preparation, implementation and maintenance of ISO-9000: 2000 Quality Management System (QMS) within the Rogers location.
Directs the Energy, Round Tools, Metallurgical and Support QA groups in the development and implementation of all quality management programs and control plans for the facility.
Manages all quality certification programs and audits.
Directs all actions within the facility to ensure maximum compliance to quality system requirements.
Provides support where needed to assistance in the achievement of customer satisfaction. Participates directly in the ACE and CAP processes.
Coordinates with manufacturing to provide solutions to quality defects due to manufacturing conditions. Uses Lean/Six Sigma and associated tools.
Works with purchasing to maintain certified supplier program for selection of suppliers and subcontractors.
Directs the preparation for Energy, Round Tools, Metallurgical and Support documents for the Quality Management Review of quality systems for each quarter.
Trains the workforce in statistical techniques of problem solving through the quality system.
Directs the team through the administration of analysis of customer problems and corrective and preventive actions.
Experience and Skills:
A bachelors degree in engineering (preferably quality engineering) with 10-15 years of experience in manufacturing and quality control. The Quality Manager must be able to communicate to a customer while not divulging any proprietary information. These skills come from years of practical experience in dealing with manufacturing problems and customer relations as well as formal education. To be successful in this position, a person must be self-motivated to become acquainted with the processes required to make the product, the customers who use the product and the associated program requirements involving quality such as ISO, QS, Q1 and any others that may apply. To be effective a person must have the ability to lead and develop those employees reporting directly to this position. A person with formal education and/or experience can acceptably perform this position; however, the focus must stay on satisfying the customer's need while protecting the company's interest. Must be proficient with project management, word processing, spreadsheet programs, Minitab, etc. Continuous Improvement, Lean Manufacturing, Scrap Reduction, Keys to Operational Excellence, FMEA, DOE, Root Cause Analysis and associated Six Sigma initiatives are all required skill sets.
