This workforce includes plant operators, accountants, marketers, environmental, health and safety professionals, and engineers, among other career types, working in a variety of settings: corporate headquarters, terminals, refineries, ethanol plants, chemical plants or sales offices. The company owns refineries and chemical plants in Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Texas; ethanol plants in Iowa; and a biodiesel plant near Fort Worth. In addition, the company owns and operates fuel and/or asphalt terminals in Alaska, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin. Flint Hills owns an interest in a base oils facility in Louisiana and has made equity investments in bioenergy companies. In addition to sales offices in North America, the company has a sales presence in Switzerland, Hong Kong and Belgium to serve global customers.



Flint Hills Resources is seeking a Health & Safety Manager to support the biodiesel plants of our Renewables Operations Group. FHR operates with high compliance standards and this role provides the opportunity to lead the safety compliance culture for our biodiesel plants. The successful candidate will have health & safety experience with an emphasis in federal and state regulations (e.g. OSHA General Industry, including Process Safety Management, etc.) and their application to renewables fuels, refining, petrochemical or industrial facilities. This position will also support plant project development and execution efforts, from a safety perspective, working to ensure a safe and compliant design and then ensuring safe project execution. In doing so they will work to anticipate and remove obstacles providing creative solutions. You will also:

  • Provide expertise and leadership in the anticipation, recognition, and evaluation of safety related compliance
  • Work closely with operations to identify risks and develop/implement a control methodology for these risks
  • Implement and maintain safety procedures and facilitate the site`s safety program, including facilitation of training, to drive continuous safety performance improvements
  • Serve as the technical expert with respect to the site`s effort executing Safe Work Practices such as energy control, confined space, hotwork, and safe work permitting
  • Provide oversight of the site`s PSM program
  • Drive closure of H&S related action items utilizing work management computer systems
  • Provide field health & safety support to plant operations and project personnel, including the coordination of on-site Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health program
  • Facilitate incident investigations
  • Participate with cross company groups to develop compliance strategies as well as provide safety and health regulatory support at each of FHR`s Renewables Fuels Facilities
  • Perform periodic self assessment audits to verify compliance and system effectiveness
  • Lead the development and implementation of emergency response procedures and plans

Work Experience & Skills Required:

  • 2+ years related experience
  • Ability to work effectively in a project team environment
  • Outstanding verbal & written communication skills- ability to communicate effectively with peers, customers and management (technical and non-technical) regarding complex technical concepts

Education Required:

  • Associate`s degree or equivalent work experience

Work Experience & Skills Preferred:

  • 5+ years Health & Safety experience at a biodiesel, ethanol, or petrochemical plant (PSM facilities)
  • Experience with implementing standards/procedures/training
  • Experience with the oversight/understanding of occupational health management

Education Preferred:

  • Bachelor`s degree in Health & Safety Field and/or Engineering

Other Considerations:

Successful candidates must:

  • Be willing to occasionally work on different shifts based on operational and project needs
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills as role is a member of the Site Leadership Team
  • Possess strong communication & interpersonal skills, be able to build strong relationships with both internal and external customers and participate effectively on cross-functional teams
  • Be willing and able to periodically travel to our biodiesel plant in Euless, TX (0%-30% of the time)
  • Able to negotiate in, on, and around piping at both grade level and above grade elevations. Must also be able to navigate vertical ladders and spiral tank stairs to reach work areas, stopping, bending, and squatting. This position may, on occasion, require the supervision of activities in confined spaces and the ability to enter same spaces through 24" diameter manways. This position may, on occasion, required the physical ability to utilize respirators and SCBA. A tolerance for scents common to renewable fuel plant operations is required as well as those of construction and maintenance related activities such as welding, painting, and tank cleaning.
