Description

Flint Hills Resources is seeking a Shift Leader at our Iowa Falls, IA ethanol plant. Successful candidate will be responsible for leading a crew to operate an ethanol production facility, to monitor production process, and identify and communicate issues with other members of the team to ensure maximum production quantity and quality.

JOB DESCRIPTION & DUTIES:

  • Lead and direct a crew of operators.
  • Assess the need for additional support for unplanned events during the shift and initiate call-outs to ensure timely arrival of support personnel on-site.
  • Prepare and distribute shift reports and conduct shift turnover for the assigned shift.
  • Learn, operate and train on all plant processes.
  • Learn, operate and train on the Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for the plant.
  • Constantly review the operation of the plant to monitor production and quality.
  • Follow procedures for plant start-up, cleaning, daily operation, and shut-down.
  • Respond to process data and make adjustments as directed to optimize plant operation.
  • Maintain records of key production variables such as production volume, yield, input consumption (chemicals, corn, etc.)
  • Communicate with team members about current plant operations including, but not limited to, any production problems.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and participate in efforts to improve efficiency and/or reduce operating costs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of plant.
  • Oversee the collection and testing of quality control samples on all process streams.
  • Maintain accurate QA records.
  • Understand and interpret test results and take appropriate action when required.
  • Communicate with QA/Laboratory to ensure correct implementation of QA policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for assigned shift regarding equipment removal/return to service and lock-out/tag-outs for maintenance.
  • Assist with diagnosing and trouble-shooting maintenance related issues.
  • Communicate with maintenance department and other teams members to coordinate maintenance and repair work in process areas.
  • Performs initial incident report, evidence preservation, and data gathering following unexpected events on shift.
  • Implements Emergency Action Plan (EAP) when required; assumes the duties of Emergency Coordinator until senior management arrives on scene.
  • Participate in and understand environmental, health, and safety programs.
  • Assist in identifying safety hazards and/or regulatory compliance problems.

WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS PREFERRED:

  • Previous ethanol or chemical plant operations experience
  • Previous on-shift operational experience.
  • Knowledge and ability with basic office computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and the ability and willingness to learn new software applications.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent


EDUCATION PREFERRED:

  • Technical School training (Industrial plant operations or Process Technology)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OR UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the essential duties of this position, the Team Member will be exposed to chemicals, moving, mechanical parts, dusty conditions, high noise levels, internal and external temperature/weather conditions. Qualified individuals must be able to meet call-in requirements as needed.

Specific physical requirements include:

  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, bending, kneeling, crawling and grasping. Standing for extended periods of time, walking up to one (1) mile per day, and data entry while seated for greater than one (1) hour.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds occasionally; Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs frequently (unassisted)
  • Capable of using hand tools, power tools, and precision-measuring and testing instruments both mechanical and electrical. Ability to open valves and torque bolts up to 1.5 inches and 200 inch lbs
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and climb several flights of stairs and ladders up to 200 feet
  • Hearing, seeing (acuity - near far and depth)
  • Exposure to environmental conditions (frequently walking in and outdoors) with exposure to extreme cold and warm temperatures from -20 to +100 degrees
  • Must be willing to work around dust, oil, grease, chemicals, and other substances
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots and hearing protection)
  • Must be able to work rotational on-call, call-ins and weekend work as needed
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and pre-hire physical.
