Note: Driving experience with a Box Truck is mandatory.

Summary description of job
Worker is responsible for driving and delivering furniture and related products to various customer sites.

Shift: 8 to 10 hours; Shift time and length may vary based on route and worker preference
Breaks: Breaks are variable based on route and worker preference
Flooring: Variable: concrete, asphalt, carpet, tile, etc. May be exposed to rough, uneven, slippery, and cluttered surfaces.
Environmental: Exposed to heat / cold seasonal. Truck cabs are climate controlled. Exposed to noise and fumes from truck.
Safety Equipment: Per worker preference: Gloves
Lighting: Artificial and natural
Productivity Variables: Self paced but must keep up with delivery timeframes
Workstation Variables: The Delivery Driver works with a Delivery Helper
Physical Demand Classification: Medium-Heavy to Heavy

Essential Job Function Functional Job Task Elements Tools and Equipment
Load truck
  • Follow delivery sheet to ensure merchandise is loaded onto the truck in the correct order
  • Assist the Delivery Helper with loading items onto the truck
  • Items are typically on scooters and can be pushed from the staging area directly onto the truck
  • The number of items loaded onto a truck varies but typically ranges from 55 to 65 pieces
  • Bulky and awkward items are typically handled by two people.
  • Workers are encouraged to ask for assistance with material handling of items greater than 100 pounds.
  • As much as possible workers utilize various wheeled assistive devices such as dollys, carts, and scooters to manipulate materials onto the truck

The weight of products typically ranges from 20 pounds up to 200 pounds.] various dressers (156 lb, 167 lb); cocktail table (108 lb); table (37 lb); Dining room table (140 lb); side chair (39 lb); chest (187 lb); Sofa (112 lb); sleeper sofa (177 lb); end table (26 lb); lamps; etc.
Perform pre-trip inspection, paperwork, and communicate with customers as indicated
  • Visually inspect the truck check for flat tires, check lights, inspect shocks, etc.
  • Check under the hood: inspect belts and fluids
  • Log beginning and ending mileage, stops, etc.
  • Determine route and driving directions
  • Greet and communicate with customers at delivery locations and collect signatures as indicated
  • Determine the most safe and appropriate means to transport furniture into the customer residence
  • Respond to communication from headquarter location regarding any route changes or updates
 Truck; paperwork; cell phone; etc.
 Drive truck
  • Operate steering wheel, foot pedals, and other controls
  • Drivers on this job are short haul and return to the start location at the end of each day
  • The number of stops per day typically ranges between 12 and 14
  • The longest consecutive drive time is typically one hour. Typical drive time between stops may range from 5 to 15 minutes.
 Box truck (Roll top opening, pull out ramp, automatic, climate controlled cab); etc.
 Unload truck
  • Open truck door (roll top)
  • Pull out truck ramp
  • Work together with the Delivery Helper to move furniture items to designated location at the delivery site
  • As much as possible workers use a two wheel dolly to move / manipulate merchandise, there are often times when assistive devices cannot be used and workers must manually carry merchandise up and/or down stairs, through tight spaces, etc.
  • Complete any final assembly and/or set up as indicated by product type
    • attach mirrors, headboards, assemble bed frames, etc.
  • The number of stops per day typcially ranges from 12 to 14 depending on the type of merchandise ordered and set up required
