SUMMARY:
The Chief Advancement Officer acts as the Vice President of Institutional Advancement’s advisor on all day-to-day operations of the Institutional Advancement division. This position will be responsible for the creation and execution of a comprehensive fund raising plan in collaboration with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and the Directors of Alumni Relations and Annual Fund, Annual Giving and Programs, and Government and Foundation Relations; assist in the management of a comprehensive communications and marketing plan; and oversight of Alumni Relations, Special Events, and Stewardship. Develop strong working relationship with corporate entities, as well as internal Financial Services Dept.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of Institutional Advancement, including supervision of all development staff, budget, data management, events, fund raising, development publications, research, stewardship, and technology.
- Oversee the creation, implementation and documentation of gift processing, grant management, and special event procedures and policies.
- Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with Controller to facilitate seamless reconciliation process.
- Assist in the development and implementation of a strategic plan for fund raising based on institutional need; assist in the creation of appropriate marketing materials.
- Oversee the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of all constituencies.
- Develop and implement benchmarks and progress reporting mechanisms.
- Provide a variety of reports, particularly financial, for the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the President, the Development Committee, Senior Leadership team, and any other entities as directed by the Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
- Plan and implement a comprehensive Planned Giving program.
- Provide leadership for all Advancement events, promoting strong collaboration and communication with internal and external communities.
- Facilitate the creation of a team-based, highly collaborative approach to division objectives; provide positive and highly productive leadership to all Institutional Advancement personnel.
- Oversee and direct all aspects of stewardship including daily gift processing and acknowledgement and donor recognition programs.
- Ensure the highest standards of fiscal responsibility and data integrity.
- Required to work evenings and weekends for special events and other pertinent projects.
- All other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of seven years prior fundraising experience (including securing major gifts) is required;
- Experience in or knowledge of the Detroit and southeastern Michigan philanthropic communities is a significant plus. Comfort and familiarity with corporate environments is a plus;
- Experience with capital campaigns a plus;
- Previous experience in Higher Ed required;
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Excellent communication skills;
- Excellent writing skills with impeccable grammar and attention to detail;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Raiser’s Edge;
- Comfort and flexibility with technology ;
- Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving is a plus;
