JOB SUMMARY
Provides direct and indirect patient care services that meet the psychological, physical and general aspect of care: utilizes the nursing process in patient care; meets the communication and education needs of patient and family; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Communicates in a professional, positive, and assertive manner congruent with Mercy Service Standards. Communicates with physicians and other team members about changes in patients' conditions and is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Maintains regulatory agency requirement and adheres to hospital policies, procedures and standards.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1 Provides direct patient care in a personalized and compassionate manner utilizing the Nursing Process:
A. Successfully demonstrates proficiency of basic skills, equipment, and procedures, including unit specific skills.
B. Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to patient care.
C. Safely administers medication by following the established policies and procedures.
D. Communicates problems to the interdisciplinary team.
E. Monitor alarms are set appropriate to patient status and are responded to without delay.
F. Communicates problems to the interdisciplinary team.

2 Documents in a manner which is complete, accurate and legible on all designated areas.
A. Requests Triage Assessment by Registered Nurse when new patient comes into ED
B. Assesses and documents condition of each assigned patient per department policies and as condition changes.
C. Completes discharge summary as per policy.
D. Completes consent forms according to policy.
E. Completes medication reconciliation per policy.
F. Completes paper chart forms, not included in the electronic medical record, appropriately.
G. Charting reflects implementation of interventions from the care plan.
H. Patient education and response is documented.
I. Monitors the ASAP Tracking board for new physician orders and acknowledges those orders expeditiously.
K. Documents medication administration as appropriate:
Medications are verified with actual physician orders.
Medications and IVs are documented in the medical record.
L. Pain assessments are performed and documented per policy.
M. Blood products are administered and documented per policy.

3 Communication skills as evidenced by:
A. Communicates verbally and non-verbally in a concise, effective, and appropriate manner to all hospital personnel, physicians, patients, and family/significant others:
Hand-off patient reports are complete, concise, and accurate utilizing SBAR.
Communicates with dignity and respect to all personnel, physicians, patients and visitors.
Reports changes in patient and/or clinical area condition to RN and/or Charge Nurse.
Consults with and/or notifies physicians/APN's/RN as needed.
Utilizes chain of command appropriately.
Notifies Clinical Coordinator/Charge Nurse before leaving unit.
Assists in keeping noise level to a minimum.
B. Displays a positive attitude.
C. Delegation:
Appropriate requests of Techs, USs, and ancillary personnel.
D. Collaboration/Coordination:
Ensures patient needs are met and adequate supplies available for the oncoming shift.
Demonstrates cooperation and support as a team member.
Works with ancillary departments to schedule tests/procedures to facilitate completion.
E. Education of patient and staff:
Acts as a change agent to facilitate new processes.
Evaluates knowledge and provides verbal and written instruction.
F. Answers all pages, call lights, and telephones promptly and professionally. Is able to answer questions or direct caller to appropriate personnel.

4 Actively supports Performance Improvement Initiatives by following hospital policies, procedures, and programs; provides ongoing peer education education (i.e., Customer Satisfaction, Physician Satisfaction, Co-Worker Satisfaction, and Process Improvement):
A. Reports occurrences and medication events to Risk Management using approved forms.
B. Reports allergic/adverse medication reactions to Pharmacy.
C. Adheres to Infection Control Policies.
D. Adheres to Employee Health Policies.
E. Performs record reviews and chart audits.
F. Identifies, documents, and reports concerns where improvement will enhance patient care and safety.

5 Demonstrates behavior that is supportive of cost effective patient care:
A. Sets priorities and utilizes time efficiently in order to complete work on time.
B. Ensures items used are properly charged and utilized appropriately.
C. Removes and returns discontinued equipment.
D. Demonstrates work habits and demeanor which contributes to the effective functioning of the unit and department. Is responsive to staffing needs of the unit. Assists in maintaining unit cleanliness.

6 Enhances professional growth and development:
A. Attends education programs, mandatory inservices, workshops, and unit meetings working towards attending or reading meeting minutes 8 or 12 months.
B. Seeks out and utilizes education from professional journals and other accepted resources.
C. Incorporates knowledge obtained into practice patterns

7 Provides safe environment of care for patients, visitors, and staff:
A. Identification of safety, infection control, and work environment hazards with prompt resolution and/or reporting of problems.
B. Demonstrates current knowledge of:
Disaster Plan
Fire Safety
Universal Precautions
Hazardous Material Identification
Electrical Safety

8 Provides age specific knowledge and skills where applicable. Works effectively with various cultures and ethnic groups.
A. Uses appropriate tools and resources for age, cultural, or ethnic needs
B. Care provided using age-appropriate modification of procedure and communication.

QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIRED

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing either Associate Degree, Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Diploma Nursing
Program.

Licensure: Registered Nurse current Arkansas license

Certification/Registration: Current Basic Life Support or complete upon hire.
Current Advanced Life Support or complete upon hire.
Current Pediatric Life Support or complete upon hire.

Ability to hear and read effectively.
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
Ability to navigate effectively in many computer systems.
Ability to work in a team focused environment. Ability to work in a rapid-paced work environment.
Ability to work independently.
Good problem-solving skills.
Ability to provide quality bedside patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED

Experience: Prefer one year of experience in emergency nursing.

Certification/Registration: Trauma Nurse Core Course

Other skills & knowledge: (skills, knowledge, abilities)
Additional languages preferred.
Previous experience with the Epic computer system preferred.
